Robert Pascoe, a noted historian and author of The Winter Game, is President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and Dean Laureate at Victoria University. In his talk Secrets of Hawthorn's Success, he examines how the Hawthorn Football Club rose to AFL prominence despite early disadvantages—small membership, limited talent pool, and lack of identity. He explores the club’s transformation from struggling beginnings in 1925 to dominance by the 1980s, including the influence of coach Kennedy’s legendary “Don’t Think, Do!” speech.
At our last Rotary meeting, our Japanese student, Masaya Endo, who is being hosted by our club, gave us an excellent presentation about his life, family in Japan, his love of sport and his study for his Masters in Linguistics at Melbourne University. We were all very impressed with how much Masaya has already achieved with his fluency in the English language.
At the club meeting on September 30th, Rotary Global Scholar Masaya Endo shared his inspiring personal journey through a presentation titled “Shaping My Story.” Born and raised in Minamisoma City, Fukushima, Japan, Masaya reflected on his roots, his passions, and the life experiences that have shaped the person he is today.

Just back from another eye camp for the Sumba Eye Program undertaken at Waikabubak Public Hospital. This was in cooperation with Perdami NTT who operated on all the cases. We had Dr Saphira, who is the first ophthalmologist for West Sumba and Dr Nita who is presently in East Sumba as well as Dr Vivivanti from Kupang. There was a lot of technology transfer occurring. It was great to meet up with all the Eye Care Nurses whom we had organised their training.

Rotary clubs unite to bring dignity and care to mental health patients through the Small Comforts Project.
This project is a true team effort and a shining example of clubs’ collaboration in action.
The project is a collaboration between the Rotary clubs of Hawthorn, Brighton North, Glenferrie, Malvern, Port Phillip, Albert Park and Williamstown and with the support of Rotary Donations in Kind (DIK). The mission is to provide care bags and new clothing to patients in public hospital mental health units. We currently support The Alfred, Box Hill’s Upton House and St Vincent’s Melbourne. Most products are donated – donors include MiGoals, Mitre 10, Pinchapoo, Kwik Copy Cheltenham, Good360 and GIVIT along with care bag sewing volunteers. Each month we deliver up to 120 care bags to each of the hospital units, along with additional clothing items to The Alfred and Upton House. Estimated annual total bags delivered = 1,500. Packing sessions happen each quarter. The next packing session is tentatively scheduled for 28th October, 2025.

As we count down to our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we’re revisiting some memorable moments from the club’s past. In 1985, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie marked its first decade by combining the Annual Changeover with a spirited celebration at the Hawthorn Football Club Social Club, Glenferrie Oval — complete with bagpipes and a distinctly Scottish theme. Whether or not they remained a “happy team at Hawthorn” after the piper’s performance is lost to history, but the smiles on the faces of these Glenferrie Rotarians tell the story of a club full of friendship, fun, and fellowship.

The Rotary Club of Glenferrie acknowledges the traditional owners as the custodians of this land, recognising their connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Australia's First Peoples, and to their elders, past, present and future.
