Just back from another eye camp for the Sumba Eye Program undertaken at Waikabubak Public Hospital. This was in cooperation with Perdami NTT who operated on all the cases. We had Dr Saphira, who is the first ophthalmologist for West Sumba and Dr Nita who is presently in East Sumba as well as Dr Vivivanti from Kupang. There was a lot of technology transfer occurring. It was great to meet up with all the Eye Care Nurses whom we had organised their training.

Dr Shapira chats with the Buparti (Governor) of Sumba, at the recent Sumba Eye Clinic in Indonesia
The UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) was installed after a Glenferrie Rotarian witnessed doctors performing operations by the light of their mobile phones. A gift from the Rotary Club of Glenferrie

It was pleasing to see that finally the UPS, which RC Glenferrie donated a couple of years ago after Richard Blakeman’s trip with us, is now up and ruuning. Since we now have an Eye Clinic set up there with slit lamp, lasers, retinal camera and a Scans etc., the UPS will ensure that the power supply will always be steady and not burn out the instruments.

The Buparti (The Governor who is all powerful on the Island) came to visit and we have a promise that the MOU with UNHAS will be completed so we can have the eye clinic at Waikabubak manned permanently with a registrar from UNHAS Makassar. Also, the Laser was working, and Dr Nick could perform SLT and yag capsulotomies. I was in theatre most of the time making sure the new sterilizer was working!
