Glenferrie Rotarians lend a hand at Power Assist Basketball, supporting fun, friendship, and community connection.

Chris Raw and Amelia Hamer joined the action at Power Assist Basketball on Friday October 3rd, helping out on the door with payments and registrations. Their friendly smiles and helping hands made sure players and supporters could enjoy a smooth start to an evening of fun, friendship, and inclusive sport.

Rotary champions inclusive sport. Chris Raw and Amelia Hamer lead a symphony of smiles at Power Assist Basketball.

Power Assist is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to personal development and building the self-esteem of people who are intellectually disabled or otherwise disadvantaged, by providing sporting opportunities—primarily through basketball.

The organisation oversees the Victorian Championship Basketball Competition, affectionately known as “Friday Night Basketball,” which offers a regular weekly sporting opportunity for more than 220 players across Melbourne. With age groups ranging from 12 to 80 and five grades of competition—including a women’s-only grade—Power Assist ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, has the chance to participate, compete, and connect.

Power Assist also brings together young players aged around 15 to 25, many of whom face mental health challenges, for a lively and welcoming night of basketball and community connection. It’s a fantastic program that celebrates ability, teamwork, and belonging.

The Rotary Club of Glenferrie proudly supports this inspiring initiative, with members volunteering at the MLC gymnasium to provide door support for players arriving each Friday. The club’s Youth Service and Community Service committees alternate each month in this rewarding hands-on role, demonstrating Rotary’s commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and community spirit.
