At our last Rotary meeting, our Japanese student, Masaya Endo, who is being hosted by our club, gave us an excellent presentation about his life, family in Japan, his love of sport and his study for his Masters in Linguistics at Melbourne University. We were all very impressed with how much Masaya has already achieved with his fluency in the English language.

Our Rotary club and other Rotary clubs like ours, have many projects underway. When people ask us about what we do in Rotary, we tend to take a deep breath and wonder where to start. We really need time to explain what Rotary is and the work that we do. I find that people are usually impressed when they hear just a few of the projects we Rotarians as volunteers, do for the community and internationally. We can all take pride in this and in the value of our Rotary club.

The FIRST OBJECT OF ROTARY is the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. It’s important that we as Rotarians attend Rotary dinner meetings regularly,  at least half of the time. The more involved we become in our club, the more enduring friendships we make and the more personal satisfaction we obtain from working together and sharing our talents for the purpose of ‘service above self’.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
