Amelia joined the Rotary Club of Glenferrie just eighteen months ago, and in that short time, she’s become a familiar and valued member of our club—known to us already as the impressive candidate for Kooyong in the recent Federal election. Despite a demanding schedule, Amelia has generously made time to contribute enthusiastically to club activities, especially the Farmers Market.
But there's much more to Amelia than what we saw on the campaign trail—and that's exactly what our Member Behind the Badge evenings are all about: discovering the stories, passions, and experiences that shape our fellow Rotarians.
Join us and hear firsthand as Amelia shares her journey at her Member Behind the Badge presentation. It's sure to be a fascinating evening!
The new Rotary year is well under way and the first Board Meeting will be held on the 24th of July. Many of the Board members are continuing in their role from last year, so we have a lot of valuable experience there. The main changes on the Board are our new Secretary, Carol Benson, who has extensive experience in this type of role, both in Rotary and her previous employment. Our new Treasurer, Don Heath, is taking on his role with enthusiasm and I’m sure with his excellent skills in maths and IT we will be in good hands. The previous Rotarians in these positions have offered to provide advice and support if necessary.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie was recognised at the District 9800 Changeover event on July 5th with a District International Service Award for the successful completion of the WASH project in Sierra Leone. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Bo, Sierra Leone, the project built two Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines and installed two 2,000 litre rainwater tanks at the Aladura Primary School in the village of Buedu, on the eastern border of the country. The project also provided a fully documented WASH program which has been adopted by the school, along with the Rotary designed ‘Hygiene Club’.
Incoming Club President Helena Wimpole accepted the award on behalf of the club from outgoing District Governor Michael Lapiña.
Engaging our families in our Rotary lives is essential to making the Rotary journey truly meaningful. Since the establishment of Rotary over 100 years ago, it’s been a valued tradition to involve our partners — not only in projects and fundraising but also in the fellowship that makes Rotary so special.
While partners and friends are always welcome at our meetings, every so often we dedicate an evening especially to them — to celebrate their support and share the joy of Rotary together.
Tuesday, July 29th, 2025 will be one of those special nights — our first Partners’ Night of the Rotary year - Click here for information about the special guest speaker. Please mark the date in your diary, invite your partner and friends, and encourage others to do the same. Let’s make it a warm, vibrant evening full of connection, conversation, and celebration.
We look forward to seeing you — and those who support you — there!
Under the leadership of Membership Development Director Anita Morkans, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie has taken an exciting step toward deepening our connection with the local community. We’re proud to announce the launch of our ‘Friends of Rotary’ program—now live on the Rotary Club of Glenferrie website.
This initiative is designed to attract, engage, and motivate community-minded individuals who wish to support Rotary projects and events, but without the formal commitments of club membership. It’s an inclusive and flexible way for more people to get involved in doing good—together.
As you may know, the cancellation of the first Saturday market means we're now counting on the third and fifth Saturday markets to bring the magic—and the money!
The Boroondara Farmers Market is the Rotary Club of Glenferrie’s major fundraiser, and your support makes all the difference. With fresh local produce, unique stallholder goodies, live music, and a vibrant community vibe, our markets are perfect for a weekend outing, a shopping spree, or just a relaxing catch-up over coffee. Come along even when you're not on duty. Better yet—bring friends and family along!

Dr Shurong Lu (centre) is an Australian Rotary Health Royce Abbey Postdoctoral Fellow
Our speaker at the first meeting of the new Rotary year was Dr Shurong Lu, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne. Dr Lu is an Australian Rotary Health Royce Abbey Postdoctoral Fellow.
Dr Lu discussed the importance of child mental health in the age group 7 - 14 years as there is evidence that 50% of adult psychiatric problems date back to this stage of life.

The Battle of Fromelles remains Australia’s worst day of warfare, with over 1700 deaths and 5000 injured. Books have been written about it, but in brief, it was intended to dissuade the movement of enemy troops from Fromelles to the Somme. One might have thought a few shells and a build-up of allied troops would have been enough, but an English general thought an assault was called for.
The German troops had occupied the area for two years and were well set up with field hospitals, a light railway, concrete bunkers and so on. The assault faced machine guns, the initial shelling was ineffective and the troops were slaughtered.
Club meetings have been noticeably quieter lately—proof, if ever we needed it, that our popular Past President Thelma Hutchison is off the grid. While we miss her sparkle and stories, Thelma and husband Andrew are cycling their way through the spectacular scenery of Norway—having already pedalled through the pancake-flat plains of Denmark.
Thelma reports that while Norway may be less forgiving on the legs, the views from the mountaintops are well worth the burn, and we’ve got the photos to prove it! With five days behind them and twelve more to go, the adventure is far from over

Past President David Sutherland was a longstanding Rotarian who joined our Club in 1976 soon after its establishment. David passed away on May 27th in his 90th year. He joined the Rotary Club of Glenferrie on June 1st 1976, the club's inaugural year. He was Club President in 1984-85 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. At his recent memorial service Jenny, David's wife, requested that a donation be given to the Rotary Foundation in lieu of flowers. Our Club made a donation to the Rotary Foundation in memory of David. Click on ‘Read more…’ to read a lovely note of thanks from Jenny.
In the September 26th 2006 edition of The Glenferrie Rotarian, President Cheryl Pisterman wrote about the induction of new member Dr Mark Ellis, Bulletin Editor John Suriano wrote of controversy over holding district conferences interstate (an apparently unpopular move), and Past President David Sutherland wrote about his recent wonderful trip to India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and how the trip gave him a deeper understanding of ROTARY AT WORK throughout the world.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie acknowledges the traditional owners as the custodians of this land, recognising their connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Australia's First Peoples, and to their elders, past, present and future.
