At our last Rotary meeting, Bob Pearce, a keen recreational fisherman and conservationist (particularly regarding fish and shellfish in our seas) spoke with considerable knowledge and passion about the work he has been involved in over many years in reef restoration in parts of Port Phillip Bay. Bob was very pleased to report that as a consequence of this work, there has been much improvement in the marine habitat and fish and shellfish have returned.
And you won't find out either, unless you come along! So, if you haven't done so already, register now before all the seats have gone. You simply just have to be there and be part of the fun - but - be prepared for the unexpected!
Speaker: Bob Pearce -BRINGING ADESERT BACK TO LIFE
Bob Pearce, right, has devoted many years to the restoration of the marine environment in Port Phillip Bay.
It was a pleasure to welcome Bob Pearce, a longstanding member of the Albert Park Yachting and Angling Club(APYAC). In fact he joined APYAC as a teenager in the 1960's. At that time it was common to retrieve the native Angasi oysters along the shoreline of Hobson's Bay. Bob detailed the history of marine habitat loss in the region of Hobson's Bay much of which ultimately became a marine desert
The club's Board of Directors held it's regular meeting in August over a pleasant glass of wine and a delicious meal at the Auburn Hotel, August 28th, combining the club's essential business considerations with the opportunity for fellowship. Discussions focused on the impact on club projects of declining Farmers Market revenues, the lack of response to the club survey earlier this year and some changes to the club's meeting schedule for the rest of the year. The Friendly Market. Maria Pantling and Amelia Hamer set the tone with big smiles for an early spring morning.
Hello Glenferrie Rotarians,
I can't say what made it friendlier than other markets, it is just a feeling I had last Saturday. Success helps of course, with quite a number of stallholders selling out, and also me getting a cevapi sausage roll with egg and bacon from Glenlyon Chestnuts, a scallop pie from Cripps Fish and a duck and cherry pie from Sascha’s Deli. (No I did not eat all of them at once…)
Masaya making market magic, with Lawrie Mann and Joanne Shentu
On Friday 20th September, our Rotary Global Scholar, Masaya Endo, enthusiastically took part in the Boroondara Farmers Market. It was a wonderful opportunity for him to experience the warmth and vibrancy of our local community while lending a hand to our club’s important fundraising activity. Masaya is studying for a Masters Degree at the University of Melbourne, funded by a grant from The Rotary Foundation.
In the leadup to the club's 50th Annversary Dinner, we reflect on significant events in the club's half century of community service. Thanks to PP Ian Willmott the photo below has surfaced, taken at the club's 30th Anniversay Dinner at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 29th, 2005. Pictured are Guests of Honour Past Rotary International President Royce Abbey and Jean, founders of the Royce and Jean Abbey Endowed Fund. Since 2021, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie has recognised a member's sustained enthusiasm and commitment to the ideals of Rotary through the granting of a prestigious Royce Abbey Award.
