At our last Rotary meeting, Bob Pearce, a keen recreational fisherman and conservationist (particularly regarding fish and shellfish in our seas) spoke with considerable knowledge and passion about the work he has been involved in over many years in reef restoration in parts of Port Phillip Bay. Bob was very pleased to report that as a consequence of this work, there has been much improvement in the marine habitat and fish and shellfish have returned.
Once again, all members of our club are encouraged to make their booking's for our 50th Anniversary Celebration before the 22nd of September. The reason for this is that it is important that members of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie have first chance to purchase their tickets as many other people who have been involved with our club over the years are also receiving invitations to the special occasion and we don’t want our members to miss out. This celebration is on Wednesday the 22nd of October and not a Tuesday because our club received its charter on this exact date in 1975.
On Friday the 12th of this month, I attended a meeting chaired by Michael Stillwell, Area Club Governor, where all seven presidents of the Rotary clubs in our cluster met over breakfast and shared with each other all the projects that each club is doing.
There were some similarities such as peace poles, provision of food for people needing assistance, and our youth projects but it was amazing to hear about the quantity of other projects the cluster of clubs is engaged in.
An important topic mentioned for all Rotary clubs to be very mindful of is Rotary insurance and risk assessment in all our projects. We will be hearing more about this as insurance premiums are rapidly increasing and we are unfortunately becoming a more litigious society.
On Thursday the 18th of September, Chris Raw and I attended a meeting organized by the Mayor of Boroondara and her team. This is an ongoing meeting that used to be held once a year but now has become twice a year.
All seven Rotary club Presidents and Presidents Elect in Boroondara are invited to an event with the Mayor and other Councillors where each club gives a presentation on their plans and activities. The idea is that the Council gains an understanding of all the Rotary programs and is available for networking and discussion.
For your calendar, our Christmas party this year is on Tuesday the 16th of December.
ps. You can add the club's calendar to your own calendar in Apple, Google or Outlook calendars and then have club events automatically inserted and updated for you, instead of having to do this manually.
