President Helena's Message

At our last dinner meeting, Rotary members and guests were given a very interesting and at times amusing presentation by two year 12 students who were sponsored by our club to attend the NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) at Queensland University. Both girls spoke about the amazing new endeavours in science which they had learned and which inspired them for their future careers.

Be Inspired! Come to Conference!

Do yourself a big favour (as Australian hero and St.Kilda tragic Molly Meldrum always said) and Come to Conference! Why? Well let's ask Ian Bentley! Glenferrie Rotarians will join with Hawthorn Rotarians on the Friday evening for a convivial evening at a local restaurant in Horsham just before the main event. This message to members from the President of Rotary Hawthorn expresses the Rotary Conference experience so well. Once you have experienced a Rotary conference, you will want more. Here's why….

The Rotary Conference Experience : President Ian Bentley, Rotary Hawthorn

The last time a District Conference was held in Western Victoria, it was in Warrnambool, where sixteen representatives from our Club attended. I remember that conference well, not just for its fellowship, but for its education, entertainment and inspiration. The RIPPR (Rotary International President’s Personal Representative) challenged us to use the event to develop our own “elevator pitch” for Rotary: what would we say, in a minute or two, that explains what Rotary is and why it matters?

It is a good question to revisit. What does set Rotary apart from most other charitable and humanitarian organisations?

The joyful District 9800 Conference in Warrnambool was celebrated in The Glenferrie Rotarian, March 23rd, 2018. Click on the above image to read the full story.

Club members enjoyed an inspiring evening at the February 26 meeting when two impressive young Australians shared their experiences at the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Georgia Law-Bianchin from Toorak College and Opal Scheele from St Catherine’s School, Toorak, were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie to attend the residential program at the University of Queensland in January. Members heard first-hand how the experience broadened their horizons and deepened their enthusiasm for future careers in science.

Clean Up Australia - Big Turnout, Big Impact

On Sunday March 1st, over 28 Rotarians and friends helped clean up the Patterson Reserve and car park and the adjacent streets and park areas as part of the “Clean-up Australia Day” events. The group included students and staff from Xavier College.

Over 10 bags of rubbish were collected including the usual plastics, cans, paper and food wraps.  This year the collection included a couch, a nitrous oxide canister (nang), needles and a mobile phone which was handed to police.

The Clean Up Australia team prepare for battle - rubbish weaponary at the ready. Member for Hawthorn John Pesutto (front row, fifth from right) was once again a welcome and enthusiastic contributor. Thanks John!

Pie Charts Positive for Buoyant Farmers Market

The Boroondara Farmers Market’s fiscal performance is holding up well, in the face of tightened family budgets and a general impression that Farmers Markets are gradually decreasing in popularity. Comparing the three Saturday Markets in December, January and February with those of 12 months prior, we are slightly ahead on revenue and stallholder numbers and breaking even on attendance. We have enjoyed favourable weather and so far this year we have been on the grass in Patterson Reserve which is always a plus.

Good weather has helped generate improved revenues at the Boroondara Farmers Market over recent months

February Board Meeting Report: Strong Finances, Active Projects and a Push to Boost Member Attendance

The Board reviewed several key aspects of club activity, including member attendance, finances, projects and upcoming events at its meeting February 26th. While the club remains in a sound financial position and recent Farmers Market results have been encouraging, concern was expressed about low attendance among some members, with steps agreed to better recognise volunteer “make-ups” and to understand members’ circumstances. The meeting also endorsed a number of upcoming activities and community initiatives, including support for bushfire relief, ongoing service projects and the near-completion of the Sierra Leone school water project. Membership growth, youth programs and future club events were also highlighted as positive developments for the months ahead.

Almoner's Report

Members will have noticed that we haven’t seen PP Peter Moore at recent meetings, and there is a very good reason for that. Peter is not one to miss a club activity unless absolutely necessary, and unfortunately in recent months it has been necessary.

Peter has been in and out of hospital undergoing a series of tests, with some results still pending and, as yet, no clear diagnosis. The encouraging news, however, is that he has made significant improvement. He is back driving and, most importantly, will definitely be attending his daughter’s upcoming wedding; a wonderful milestone for the whole family.

While Peter is still undergoing further tests and rebuilding his stamina, he insists he has not surrendered to afternoon naps, unlike certain other Rotary colleagues! He has a few more medical checks in the weeks ahead and is hopeful of returning to near-normal before too long.

Peter, you are very much missed by everyone at Rotary, and we greatly look forward to seeing your smiling countenance back at Kooyong very soon.

Glenferrie Eagles Spot a Birdie at Rotary North Balwyn Golf Day

On 2nd March, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie was represented by a bevy of Rotary talent in the form of past presidents Don Moore, Don Heath and Mark Ellis at the Rotary Club of North Balwyn’s annual golf day at Kew Golf Club.  A guest of Mark, Dan Phan from Whitehorse Optical, added to the group.  The weather was intermittent rain which was ironic in that the money raised was going to the Bush Fire Appeal - up to $10,000.
