It will be an amazing evening full of laughter, maybe tears and lots of memories fuelled by good foodand drinks of whatever type you favour. I look forward to seeing members and partners there.
Speaker: Professor Robert Pascoe: Secrets of Hawthorn's Success
At our Tuesday meeting, we had the pleasure of listening to Professor Robert Pascoe (from Victoria University and President of the Royal Victorian Historical Society). The presentation delivered by Professor Pascoe offered an engaging and insightful exploration into the factors behind team success in the AFL, with a particular focus on Hawthorn’s impressive legacy over the past five decades. Drawing on his extensive credentials as a historian and author—including his renowned work “The Winter Game”—Professor Pascoe was exceptionally well placed to lead the discussion.
Professor Robert Pascoe, centre, explored the influences that created the most successful Australian Rules Football club in the post-war period, the Hawthorn Football Club
On Saturday, 11th October, the Glenferrie Gallopers laced up their walking shoes and hit the Yarra River Trail for this year’s End Polio Walk. It was a day filled with sunshine, smiles, and strong team spirit as members came together in support of Rotary’s mission to end polio worldwide.
So far, the Glenferrie Gallopers have raised $2,393, an impressive milestone that brings Rotary one step closer to eradicating polio forever. (Ed. note: Even better, that $2,366 becomes $7,179 when the 2:1 matching grant from the Gates Foundation is added). A big thank you goes to everyone who participated and those who generously sponsored the walkers.
The team will continue walking and fundraising throughout October, and supporters are encouraged to donate and help them reach their goal. Every step taken and every dollar raised brings hope to children around the world.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie will join with the teachers and students at Loreto Mandeville Hall, Toorak on Remembrance Day 2025 to conduct a Peace Ceremony and install a Peace Pole, donated by the club. It is expected that the students will be accompanied by parents and friends, and that local community leaders will also attend. Registration is essential so that names of people attending can be provided to school authorities in advance of the ceremony.
The promotion of peace and conflict resolution, in our world and in our lives, is a primary Area of Focus for Rotary, and has been since Rotary was founded. Peace Poles carry the message of peace - “May Peace Prevail On Earth” - in the languages of the world. They are recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument dedicated to peace on earth. Peace Poles have been planted on every continent in the globe in over 200,000 communities. The Peace Pole at Loreto Mandeville Hall will be the 482nd installed in Australia since our local project began in 2021.
