And in the evening After the fire and the light One thing is certain: Nothing can hold back the light. Time is relentless And as the past disappears We're on the verge of all things new.
Well, I am certain it is getting brighter for all of us as the donuts string-out to 2 weeks of no new cases. I have started the new PE training recently diligently getting prepared for another term as leader. I was most impressed with out new District Governor Elect, Dale Hoy, from the Rotary Club of Brighton. His guidance will be essential to lead us into the light of face to face meetings next year.
Spring was definitely in the air at the Boroondara Farmers Market last Saturday, November 21st, as sunshine and a sense of returning normality encouraged crowds to Patterson Reserve, Hawthorn. Patrons commented very favourably on the new seating arrangements under the trees, allowing a cup of coffee and a chat in a friendly fairground atmosphere. The Rotary Christmas Cakes and Puddings Stall was hugely popular, with substantial funds raised for The Rotary Foundation.
Next month's Market promises to be even bigger, with a special visitor expected to pop in from the northern hemisphere, once he has cleared quarantine and completed his list of who's been naughty and nice. It's great to be back bigger and better, and in time for Christmas too! Click on 'Read more' for a few happy snaps from Saturday's market.
District Governor Philip Archer has announced that the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post will issue a special coin and stamp collection in 2021 to mark Rotary's 100th anniversary in Australia and New Zealand. The announcement was made at the 'Happy as Larry Lunch' event on November 19th, broadcast online from the Royal Brighton Yacht Club by the Rotary clubs of Melbourne and Brighton North. The collection will be launched at two special breakfasts on February 4th, 2021, one in Melbourne and one in Sydney. The Rotary 100 Years Downunder celebrations are sure to be high profile next year, including in the City of Boroondara, where a number of events are planned to leverage the special Rotary themed interactive playground sculpture at Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn.

This had been an interesting year with COVID lockdowns. Australia and Indonesia have been reeling under the burden of this pandemic. However, the SEP has been active in the background. Although there have been no Australian teams going over to Sumba in 2020, we are still actively engaged in supporting eye care in this far low resourced community on this Eastern Indonesian Island.
Our last trip was in August 2019. The two usual trips were naturally cancelled with the pandemic spreading rapidly round the world. We are still supported by Optometry Giving Sight (OGS), Rotary, RACS and your kind donations.
Glenferrie Rotary is to be part of a Rotary Network celebration of Australia Day Jan 26, 2021. We have been given the opportunity to bring our Rotary Network together…our community partners, first responders, business and government friends, and most importantly, our community…to celebrate all that is Australian. The theme for Australia Day this year is: Reflect, Respect, Celebrate. We’re all part of the story. For 100 years Rotary in Australia has been bringing communities together.
After our drought, bushfires and COVID-19, this is a wonderful opportunity to bring us together in a COVID-safe way in all our respective towns and cities, and be part of one event that will inspire.
We will be selling again this year at the 19 December Boroondara Farmers Market our Rotary Foundation Cakes and Puddings. They were very popular last year and we sold out. Photography is a pastime in which most of us participate at some time or other. Many of us enjoy photographing members of our family and capturing wonderful sights we have seen on overseas visits and other holidays. Some also enjoy taking artistic photos of nature such as a flower, a bird, or something else that takes our interest. A large proportion of the population in Western countries and many people in developing countries, now have access to mobile phones with cameras. With the increase in technical capability of these phones, producing quality photos has become easier than ever before. Nevertheless, serious photographers and professionals still use hi-tech cameras and equipment to achieve quality images.
I’m delighted to advise that a new satellite club will be chartered next Tuesday, 24th November. The Rotary CEO Satellite Club of Southbank is a new concept, bringing together a team of senior leaders from corporate, not-for-profit, research and government backgrounds whose aim will be to develop strategy to influence key stakeholders to support nominated projects; and, to adopt the United Nations’ Four Principles for Social Investment and drive corporate social responsibility.
The club will receive the Annual Report from the Board of Directors and elect office bearers for 2021-2021 at its 45th Annual General Meeting, to be held via Zoom. Zoom details to be emailed to attendees.
