Presidential Musings for the Week

Last Tuesday was a great night for the Rotary Club of Glenferrie’s Changeover. We beat the lockdown and were able to celebrate the past year in style. Unfortunately, back to Zoom for our next meeting on 20th July.

We thank Kooyong Tennis Club for use of its newest conference room and the delicious food served. John Hudson is responsible for setting up this great value for money night. Lyn Spencer with her usual decorative flair created a visual spectacular. We had many dignitaries from various Rotary Clubs, past district governors, politicians, Boroondara Councillors and the Mayor of Boroondara, Gary Thompson. As stated, many there were my Rotary heroes.

Changeover a Triumph as New Board Inducted
President Mark Ellis AM welcomed his new board at Changeover on Tuesday July 13th in a celebration of the club's accomplishments and what it means to be a Rotarian. A number of members were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the club, to Rotary and to the community.  Past President Ian Salek was awarded the club's first ever Royce Abbey Award for 'enthusiasm and commitment to the ideals of Rotary'. Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions were awarded to PP Thelma Hutchison, Dr Claus Bogh, Health Program Director for the Sumba Foundation, Indonesia, and to club Membership Development Director Elizabeth Dumonic. Special Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Elizabeth Dumonic and  International Service Director Mark Howlett.

Before an audience that included Mayor of Boroondara, Garry Thompson and the Member for Hawthorn, Mr John Kennedy, District Governor Dale Hoy and Immediate Past District Governor Philip Archer, an absorbing program skilfully MCd by Past President Charles Tran highlighted the extensive work of Rotary in the community, the diversity of Rotary membership and the strong bonds that unite us.

Help Needed to Make our Playground Opening a Resounding Success
It's getting close to the big day and volunteers are needed to help make the day a success.
Help is needed firstly with letterboxing the immediate neighbourhood on the weekend before the event. Five clubs are each taking responsibility for a specific sector in the area around the Reserve, encompassing parts of Hawthorn, Kew and Richmond.

Help is also needed with setting up the marquis, tables, chairs etc at Yarra Bank Reserve on the day; stewards are needed to greet and direct the public and ensure Covid requirements are met; and help is needed to dismantle the equipment on the Sunday afternoon and return it to the Farmers Market container.

If you can help, please add your name to the volunteer roster. To access the Volunteer Roster, click here:

How to Reduce Your Energy Bills and Stay Warm
How to Reduce Your Energy Bills and Stay Warm

Tim Forcey trained as a chemical engineer and worked for decades in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries with Exxon Mobil, BHP, and others. In more recent times, Tim published renewable energy research with the University of Melbourne where he showed how Australians could save money by heating with their reverse cycle air cons instead of using gas. As you will hear, in order to spread the word about these useful home energy economics, Tim went on to found and co-administer the 32,000 member facebook group 'My Efficient Electric Home'. Tim also assists individual Victorians in their homes as a home comfort and energy advisor.
