Presidential Musings for the Week
On last Friday, I had the pleasure of being a Guest Speaker at the 30 year celebration of Glenferrie Probus. RC Glenferrie was involved right from the start in 1991 in setting up the Glenferrie Probus Club INC. Basically, Probus is the next step after Rotary. Probus has over 4,000 worldwide member clubs for retirees and those planning retirement. My parting words could easily be stated about our club. Since our Rotary Club of Glenferrie is evolving in this same situation. We have had to adapt to electronic media. “I see a real challenge to Probus to keep your members mentally and physically active".
This threat to our health and wellbeing will, I am confident, be overcome with thought, planning and a good community will. Quoting from motivational speaker Les Brown – “Life has no limitations; except the ones you make.” I am particularly keen to try and get all our members to be involved and enjoy being in a progressive club like ours.

We're Back in Business! November 21st Confirmed for Yarra Bank Playground Opening
With the lifting of restrictions coming out of Lockdown, we can confirm the Family Fun Day/Gala Opening of the R100 Yarra Bank Playground will be going ahead on Sunday 21 November, commencing 12 midday. Make sure you mark the date in your diary, there will be a range of entertainment, food and coffee available, so bring your kids and grandkids along.

Our club, assisted by a $9,000 grant from The Rotary Foundation, has made a significant financial contribution towards this playground, and our Rotary 100 Playground Committee has worked hard over two years to bring the project to fruition, so please show your support by attending this fun afternoon.

There will also be volunteers needed, firstly to letterbox a specific area with resident notification flyers (a Council requirement) the week before the event, and on the day we need volunteers to act as COVID Marshalls and the like. Keep an eye out for calls for volunteers and save the date for all the fun of the Fair at Yarra Bank Reserve, November 21st.
The Victorian Government requires that people over the age of 16 entering the Reserve check in using the Victoria Services app and, unless possessing a valid exemption, wear a properly fitted mask and provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Thank you for doing your part to keep us safe
Speakers Talk - ROMAC & Crisma

On Tuesday evening 27 October last our member Helena Wimpole delivered her presentation on her association with Rotary Overseas Medical Aid For Children (ROMAC), She related to us her experiences in helping bring better prospects to children from developing countries. She found that hosting a child in her home was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.  Crisma came to stay with Helena with her mother Caroline. Crisma then spent time at Royal Children's Hospital where her medical problems were assessed and corrected.

Helena took in Crisma who was shy, but mostly outgoing. She enjoyed doing different tasks such as shopping, washing, drying dishes and bringing in the laundry. She enjoyed writing, and drawing in her scrapbook. She had some lovely outings ranging from visiting the local cafe (where she had a hot chocolate) and she had a great time when she went to the zoo.

The number and depth of questions from fellow members and guests showed just how impressed and moved they were with what Helena had to share with us,. A very enjoyable and informative evening was had by everyone including myself.

Mental First Aid Courses

WHY: One in every five Australians aged 16-85 experience some form of mental illness in any year.

HOW: The knowledge and skills and how to provide initial assistance can be acquired by doing a Mental Health First Aid Course.

WHAT: The standard mental health first aid course will be presented as a 12-hour blended course. This course teaches the skills to help a person developing depression, troublesome anxiety, psychosis and substance use problems or a person who may be in a mental health crisis such as feeling suicidal or having a panic attack.
