Learning, Leading, Action - Showcasing the Wonderful Impact of Rotary
Presidential Musings for the Week
It is a pity that we have more cancellations to our fundraisers. In the last week, we have the cancellation of the Lift the Lid dinner Oct 5th and the rescheduling of the Rotary 100 year playground project, now set for November 21st. It is beyond our control. No meetings at Kooyong. We don’t realised how lucky we are to have each other in a club to relate too, even if over electronic media.

The American Management expert Gary Hamel states “Why is it that the essence of our humanity, our desire to reach beyond ourselves, to touch others, to do something that matters, to leave the world just that little bit better is so often not realised at work?”  It is because people don’t think and act to follow it through.

Third Time Lucky for Playground Opening! Sunday November 21st 2021
There's no doubt that Covid-19 is playing havoc with the best laid plans, and our Grand Opening and Family Fun Day event at the Yarra Bank Reserve playground has not been exempt. The organising committee, comprising representatives from all six Boroondara clubs involved with this gala event, met via Zoom last Friday to take stock after the latest announcements from the Victorian Government. For the third time this year a new date has been set for the event. Third time lucky!

Donations to the Salvation Army
At this difficult time during the pandemic, the demand for emergency food relief has increased significantly. In previous years the Community Services group has provided emergency homeless packs but, since the start of the pandemic, these have not been in great demand, as the Government has provided accommodation for the homeless. Norman Gale, Coordinator of Community Services, Salvation army, provided a list of high demand items required such as rice, sugar and tooth-paste.

The members of the Community Services Group, Michael Berry, Simon Messenger, Isaiah Lahai, Geoff Widmer, and Helena Wimpole were each allocated 3-4 items to purchase for donation. We spent more than $900 to buy 22 useful items across a wide spectrum; from Vegemite, honey, coffee, tea to deodorant and soap. Coles Supermarkets were very supportive and provided a total discount of $295.

Speaker - Gideon Meltzer - StrokeSafe

What is a stroke: According to the information on the Stroke Foundation's website: A stroke happens when blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Blood is carried to the brain by blood vessels called arteries. Blood contains oxygen and important nutrients for your brain cells. Blood may be interrupted or stop moving through an artery, because the artery is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or bursts (haemorrhagic stroke). When brain cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients, they die. The area of brain damage is called a cerebral infarct.

Rotarians on Social Network Fellowship
So you can’t meet socially face-to-face during this ongoing COVID pandemic?  But if you are a member of the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship, you can still connect, Tweet or be LinkedIn and enjoy the company of fellow Rotarians; you can share their activities and “Like” their projects.

The Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship is just one of the numerous Rotary International Fellowships that are available for Rotarians and their families to join. These Fellowships are initially established by a particular Rotarian or group of Rotarians, who have a strong personal interest or passion and who would like to share this with other Rotarians worldwide.  There are currently close to 100 Fellowships, but this number varies as new Fellowships are formed and a few discontinue.
