I trust you all had a HAPPY EASTER, despite the limited distances we could travel due to the petrol shortage. At least it was mostly beautiful Autumn weather. It was a time that reminds us of renewal and hope, so it feels especially poignant that, alongside the joy of the season and the celebration at our last meeting of our young people’s achievements, we also reflect on the recent loss of our friend, Tim Gale. His passing is a sad moment for our club, and a gentle reminder to value both the opportunities we create for others and the friendships we share. Rest in peace Tim.
Dr Tim Gale, left, was an active and valued member of the Farmers Market Committee
It is with deep sadness that the Rotary Club of Glenferrie advises members and friends of the passing of our much-loved and highly respected Rotarian, Dr Tim Gale, on Tuesday 7 April 2026, following a long illness.
Tim was introduced to Rotary by Past President Robert Winspear and inducted into our club on 11 September 2018. From the outset, he embraced Rotary with warmth and enthusiasm. He was a valued member of the Farmers Market Committee and brought particular joy to many through his regular role as Santa at both the Christmas Market and our annual Christmas celebration.
Tim’s kindness, generosity of spirit, and dedication to service will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His loss will be deeply felt across our club.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Elaine and the Gale family at this very sad time.
The children of Buedu celebrate the commissioning of their new water storage and reticulation system at the Aladura Primary School
A vibrant community celebration has marked the commissioning of the new water storage and reticulation system at Aladura Primary School in Buedu, Sierra Leone. The project, led and implemented by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie and the Rotary Club of Bo, Sierra Leone, reflects a strong international partnership.
Funded with proceeds from the Boroondara Farmers Market, and supported by generous grants from Balwyn Rotary, and the Australian Government through Australia Aid, the initiative will significantly improve water access, hygiene, and learning conditions for students. The event highlighted both community pride and ongoing commitments to education and sustainability, and will deliver benefits to the Buedu community for many years to come.
As a result of the investment by Rotary in the school, Sierra Leone the Deputy Director of Education has committed to the assignment of government-paid teachers to the school.
Rotary Club of Glenferrie members were among the hundreds of Rotarians who travelled to Horsham for the recent Rotary Multi-District Impact Summit, a landmark gathering that brought together Rotary Districts 9800, 9780 and 9510 for a weekend of learning, fellowship, inspiration, and (very important), fun. Held from 27–29 March 2026 at the Horsham Town Hall, the summit marked a significant collaboration between the three districts, united under the theme “Uniting for Good.” Rotarians and friends travelled from as far afield as Adelaide and Melbourne and nearby townships; by train, bus and car. A vibrant atmosphere focused on connection, innovation and the future impact of Rotary.
The Board met on 26 March 2026 for a productive session covering key club business. Highlights include a reaffirmation of our Child Safe Environment Policy, a strong financial report from Treasurer Thelma, a bumper Farmers' Market with 922 patrons and gross takings of $5,045, and several important updates to how we manage club payments and events. The happy ROCAN team at Axedale en route to Horsham. Heck of a long way to go for a cup of coffee.
Another grueling ride has just finished with Thelma Hutchison and Mark Ellis representing the Rotary Club of Glenferrie in the annual Rotary Against Ovarian Cancer (ROCAN) Ride to Conference 2026. There were 30 riders, a long course 1,000kms in 7 days and a short course 700kms in 7 days. We chose to complete the short course. Despite having our bikes properly set up, wearing quality cycling gear, and using plenty of chamois cream, we complained endlessly about saddle-sores, chafing and butt bruising.
To commemorate ANZAC Day, our April 28 meeting will be a special ‘Partners and Friends’ night. While guests are always welcome at any time, this is a particularly meaningful occasion to share with those close to us.
We are honoured to welcome Glenferrie Rotarian and former Victorian Premier, The Hon Ted Baillieu AO, who will speak on “Australians at War: We Will Remember Them.” Beyond his time as Premier, Ted chaired Victoria’s ANZAC Centenary Committee (2013–2019), helping connect communities with the legacy of the original ANZACs.
Please be sure to extend an invitation to your partners and friends for this special evening.
Commemorating the ANZACS. This will be a night to remember.

There were plenty of doggy smiles at the March Farmers Market. Woof!
Another great Doggy day at the market on March 21st, with our resident vet Andrea Kimler providing advice, support and training for the many pets and their owners who came along on Saturday. With the good weather it all made for a special day thanks so much to Andrea, Heidi, judge Dan and all involved, including the Boroondara animal management team.
