We are quickly coming to the end of Rotary activities for 2024. Our Christmas function on 17th December is the last official function for the year. I urge all members and their partners to attend for what is sure to be a great night.
In addition to this function I am having a President’s lunch at the Glenferrie Hotel on 12th December at 12.30 p,m. All are welcome, just front up and share a bit of fellowship with your fellow members. No doubt there are lots of other celebrations taking place, we have already had a family gathering as people are heading overseas around Christmas.
Its a fantastic time of year to rediscover the joys of family and friendship.
The club welcomed new member Ray Isaac into the Rotary family on November 26th, with an induction ceremony at the Club Meeting at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. Ray has been admitted to the Vocational Classification "Accounting-Public Practice". Ray, a CPA, is Managing Director of The Bottom Line Business Advisory, a cloud-based accounting, financial services and business advisory firm based in Chadstone.

Work is almost complete on the toilet blocks at the Aladura Primary School in Buedu, Sierra Leone, thanks to the energy and commitment of our project partners at the Rotary Club of Bo. The male toilet block is finished and the female toilet block will be completed this week. The new toilets will be celebrated with a special event at the school, to be attended by the parents children and staff, and important people from the village. School will break up for Christmas shortly afterwards, returning January 5th 2025.
The project has defined a procedure for the Hygiene Club, to be run by a teacher volunteer, that will engage older students in caring for the toilets, ensuring water buckets are in place, that soap is in the dispensers, and that the toilets are kept clean. The Rotary Club of Glenferrie and the Rotary Club of Bo are also currently engaged in drafting a WASH program for the school, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, teaching the importance of hygiene and washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before eating. The WASH program will become part of the regular school curriculum.
The project is being delivered with the assistance of a District International Grant from The Rotary Foundation.

Last Tuesday we were fortunate to have one of our own members in Jennifer de Vos as our “Member behind the Badge” guest speaker. Jenny grew up in Essendon and attended Ave Maria Ladies’ College. She then completed a Bachelor of Business at Deakin University followed by a Master’s Degree in Property at RMIT University. This was followed by a 30-year career in Property Centre Management.

Led by PE Helena Wimpole, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie has applied successfully for a grant from the Rotary Foundation to fund a secondary scholarship at the Swinburne Senior Secondary College for 2025 and 2026. The scholarship, amounting to $2,500, is awarded to a talented and motivated student or students, currently in Year 10, and whose family faces financial challenges, to help with their education related expenses during Years 11 and 12. The club will provide $1,250 towards the scholarship, which is matched with a Rotary Foundation grant of $1,250.

Rotary Global Scholar Hikaru Sato has returned to Japan to take up a new role with the Health and Global Policy Institute after successfully completing her Masters Degree in Public Health at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. Hikaru was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mito in Japan and mentored during her time in Australia by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie, led by PP Teresa Liu. Her tuition and living costs during her eighteen months in Australia were funded by The Rotary Foundation.
