Last Tuesday we were fortunate to have one of our own members in Jennifer de Vos as our “Member behind the Badge” guest speaker. Jenny grew up in Essendon and attended Ave Maria Ladies’ College. She then completed a Bachelor of Business at Deakin University followed by a Master’s Degree in Property at RMIT University. This was followed by a 30-year career in Property Centre Management.

Jenny deVos entertained the club meeting November 26th with an absorbing Member Behind the Badge talk. Pictured here with President Peter Moore, left, new Glenferrie Rotarian Ray Isaac, and Meeting Chair PP Don Heath, right.
Among the many properties that Jenny managed some of the highlights were:
  • 1993 Centre Manager Brimbank.
  • 1997 Centre Manager Gandal Group Northland.
  • 2003 Colonial First State Regional Manager.
  • 2006 Federation Group Regional Manager. This included management of 150 properties so kept Jenny busy all the time.

One of the amusing anecdotes that Jenny told us about was when two teenage boys were caught stealing at Eastland. As manager she had to interview them and proceeded to tell them that they were hurting their own futures by this behaviour. One of the boys then swore at Jenny but the other boy punched him on the nose and told him “Don’t swear in front of the lady”!

Jenny also had a busy corporate life as a Director and Board Member of a number of large organisations. Some of these were:
  • Hume City Council Employment committee.
  • Royal Victorian Eye and Ear hospital.

Jenny retired in 2015 and is now very happily involved in looking after her grandchildren and her 95-year-old mother, as well as giving back to the community via her involvement in our Rotary club.

My final comment was “we are very fortunate to have such an experienced manager to share her skills with our Rotary club.”
