Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying or life-threatening event or events. Symptoms include intrusive thoughts, avoidance of contact with people, places and situations that serve as reminders of the traumatic event, feeling constantly on guard, experiencing angry outbursts, trouble sleeping, with persistent feelings of fear, guilt, or emotional numbness. It is a common condition for members of the armed forces who have served in a war zone, a condition which in the past was not taken seriously with often devastating consequences for sufferers and their families.
Pamela Young is a member of the East Malvern RSL. Her life has been shaped by many rich experiences, much happiness, and the sadness that naturally comes with life. Pam met her future husband, who was in the Australian Army, when she was 28 and became stepmother to his two children. They were married for 15 years and shared many happy times. Pam never imagined she would go through separation and divorce, which she now understands was influenced by her husband’s post-traumatic stress. Come along and hear Pam's story. The two guest speakers at our last dinner meeting, Mel Key, General Manager of Programs and Operations and Nikko Riazi, Chairperson of the Education Chances Foundation, expressed their keen desire to inform and update members of our club about the important work they do for the program, “Education Chances.” For most of the time that the Boroondara Farmers Market has been in existence, this program has received half of the proceeds from the Boroondara Farmers Market, which have been given to them by the City of Boroondara. Over the years, many students who have experienced financial hardship, which has impeded their educational potential, have succeeded in their studies with the aid of financial scholarships and many have proceeded to further tertiary study. We were delighted to have several other members of Education Chances join us for the evening and meet up with club members.

Changeover is one of the great nights in the Rotary year. It is the time when you dress up, bring your partner and enjoy the Changing of the Guard as it were. The Rotary Year starts in July, following the financial calendar. Towards the end of June a special night is organised to mark the end of a Rotary year and the beginning of a new one. It is a time when appreciation is extended to committees for the work they have achieved and maybe to members who have earned the respect of the club by the awarding of a Paul Harris Fellow recognition or a certificate of appreciation. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is one of the highest awards the club can bestow on a member.
At Changeover we induct a new president and thank our outgoing president for the work they have done. It is also a time for the incoming president to introduce to the club his or her new team that will carry the club forward for the new year and to give a brief overview of what the club should look forward to in the new Rotary year.
I therefore encourage all members to attend and join with other Rotarians not only from our club but the visitors from our neighbouring clubs. It is a wonderful experience not to be missed.

At the club meeting on May 26th, our club was informed by Mel Key and Rikko Riazi of the function and necessity of the Education CHANCES Foundation (ECF). The Rotary Club of Glenferrie is a major sponsor in that 50% of the earnings from the Boroondara Farmers Market are donated (via the Boroondara Council) to Education CHANCES It was appropriate for the ECF Board to update and promote this worthy project. Education CHANCES funds more than 100 deserving students annually to pursue their secondar and tertiary education. the late Helen Worladge OAM, a founder of Education CHANCES, was a recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition through the Rotary Club of Glenferrie in 2023.

For some time Glenferrie Rotarians have been leading cooking classes at the Salvos Camberwell for men who admit to being all thumbs when it comes to cooking. At the most recent of the current series of cooking classes for men, helping them learn how to cook a simple, nourishing meal, turned out to be a culinary delight. Our Board meeting on 28 May 2026 covered key financial decisions, including approval of $5,291.73 in unbudgeted capital expenditure for the Farmers' Market and a membership fee increase to $450 per year for 2026-27 to address declining revenues. The Sumba Eye Care Program in Indonesia delivered outstanding results from its April trip, providing care to 818 people and performing 55 cataract surgeries. Membership matters included the re-admission of Charles Tran and a new suggestion requiring all members to join at least one committee before others take on multiple roles, addressing an engagement gap where 12 members currently sit on no committees. The Board also noted an insurance risk concerning the upcoming Children's Day Market event, with a formal motion deferred to the next meeting on 25 June.
