Welcome to Australia Masaya Endo オーストラリアへようこそ
Yamato, population 250,000, is where Masaya hails from,  and is located in Kanagawa Prefecture, close to Tokyo and Yokohama

The club will welcome Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholar Masaya Endo to the club meeting on Tuesday July 29th. Masaya arrived in Australia just recently and will commence his studies in August. Graduating from Tamagawa University with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English Language Education, Masaya will study for his Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. He is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kanagawa Shonan, Rotary District 2780 Japan, and will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie during his two-year stay in Australia. Club Foundation Director is leading a team to host Masaya, which includes President Helena, and past presidents Cheryl Pisterman and Mark Howlett. If you would like to be part of the team to help Masaya settle in to life in Melbourne, please have a chat with Joanne. She would love to hear from you.

Given that Masaya is returning to Japan one day as a highly qualified educator in the English languiage, members are asked to resist the temptation to speak Strine. There are fears it could lead to generational dysfunction. But do come along on Tuesday and meet Masaya. He has an incredible story to tell.

This Week's Blast from the Past

The Formation of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie -1975

The Rotary Club of Glenferrie is the third Rotary Club to have been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hawthorn in its locality. The first was the Rotary Club of Camberwell, chartered in 1956, followed by the Rotary Club of Kew in 1967. The idea of canvassing support for a third new club in Hawthorn territory was first discussed early in 1974. Some of the older members of Rotary Hawthorn saw the need for further extending Rotary activity in the area and their opinion was backed up by a request from District Governor Ted Atkinson (1974-75) to examine this idea.

A subcommittee was formed in October 1974 to consider the proposal.

The 21st Anniversary of the Charter of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie held at William Angliss College Melbourne. Helping to cut the cake are, from left, Neville Nicholls, Jack Cathie, David Fincham, Louis Cohen, Jack Balloch, Linsey Flint, Don Moore, Llew Jones and Roy Longworth.

The Reliability Unit That Couldn't (But Occasionally did)

— A tale from Patterson Reserve, July 19, 2025

On a windy, chilly, early Boroondara afternoon, after a solid morning’s work sitting and chatting, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie prepared once again for battle — not against world hunger or illiteracy this time, but against their most cunning foe: the deceptively named “Reliability Unit No.1.”

Painted a cheerful orange and proudly bearing the Rotary insignia, this electric trolley looked like it meant business. Equipped with turf rolls, PVC piping, a tangled mess of marquee parts, and at least one rogue chair leg from 2012, it had all the makings of a hero vehicle. Yet, beneath its hopeful facade lurked the soul of a stubborn goat with a fondness for throwing sensor errors.

The infamous Reliability Unit No.1, stubborn as an old goat
