“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.” So, we start this year off with an appropriate quote from Mother Teresa. Seems fit for a Rotary slogan, since we all want to help our fellow “person” and within Rotary our combined work adds to great achievements within our club. I hope everyone has had a good rest and while in that time two of my good friends and mentors have died, we are blessed with a new grandson, Louis James, born a couple of weeks prior to Christmas. How life evolves!!
Reflecting the theme Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We’re all part of the story, the combined Rotary Clubs of Boroondara are providing a family-friendly, inclusive and respectful Australia Day celebration in Victoria Park, Kew at the corner of High Street and Adeney Avenue on Tuesday 26th January 2021.
The International Service Committee, led by International Service Director Mark Howlett, has successfully launched a new project for the club which will bring great joy to children in developing nations. Partnering with the City of Boroondara and the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playground (RORP) program, the project will harvest playgrounds in the city that are due for replacement, and ship them via Rotary Donations in Kind to communities in developing countries, including Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, the Philippines, Cambodia and Tanzania, where they will be reassembled by local Rotary clubs.
The first four playgrounds scheduled for harvesting have been identified. Please let Mark know via email or in person if you would like to volunteer to help out with this wonderful program, and watch for more details in future Bulletins.
We're back on deck on February 9th, literally! Kooyong LTC has given us the green light to return to Kooyong for club meetings, commencing Tuesday February 9th, 2021 with a barbecue on the deck.
Partners, friends and prospective new members are especially welcome. As the meeting will be outside in the fresh air, the maximum number of attendees has been set at seventy.
There will be one difference however. Kooyong requires the names and phone numbers of all attending in advance, to meet Covid requirements. So members and guests must book and pay in advance. You will receive a separate personal invitation to the event soon, which will contain a link to enable you to book directly. So see you soon, on deck at Kooyong on Tuesday February 9th!
The Meeting Duty Roster is now on the club's website and can be found by clicking on >Member Resources > Rosters > Club Meeting Duty Roster.
As a club member, your personal duty roster also appears each week at the bottom of your copy of The Glenferrie Rotarian and, in the Member's Area of the club website, where you will find it under >My ClubRunner > My Commitments
Looking forward to a return of the Good Ol' Days at Kooyong! No ZOOM code required!
In historical terms, the development of railroads has occurred relatively recently. The need for good, reliable transport of coal for the Industrial Revolution provided the impetus. During 1825 in the United Kingdom, George Stephenson applied the steam technology of the day and created the world’s first successful locomotive, which was authorised to carry both freight and passengers. Thereafter, railroads were constructed throughout Europe, the US and many other parts of the world.
The definition of a perfectionist: someone who wants to go from point A to point A+.
One of my wife’s third graders was wearing a Fitbit watch, which prompted my wife to ask, “Are you tracking your steps?” “No,” said the little girl. “I wear this for Mommy so she can show Daddy when he gets home.”
“I make mistakes; I’ll be the second to admit it.”
I loved the dress that I bought at a flea market. It fit perfectly, and the skirt was a swirl of intricate pleats. I wore it confidently to an evening party and glowed when a woman exclaimed, “Oh, how stunning!” Yes, I was grinning from ear to ear, until she added cheerfully, “Hang on to it, honey. Pleats will come back someday.”
