Presidential Musings for the Week

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” So says Jimmy Dean country singer, actor and businessman. Our club has been enduring the “direction of the wind”, but we certainly have set our sails to be able to continue our projects, as well as continuing the Farmer’s Market and the Salvation Bread Run. How ironic when the Rotary Theme for October is “Economic and Community Development”.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Amelia Anderson into our club as my first zoom inductee. An interesting experience for me as well. We wish Amelia well in her new family – The Rotary Club of Glenferrie. Paul Shekleton will be inducted hopefully in November.

We were treated to a fascinating “Family” – Member behind the badge. Geoff and Kay Widmer are our first family membership. I say repeatedly that the best talks we have are often given by in house. The Widmers had a wealth of past experiences to share with us. Must get to sit with them on a Farmer’s Market duty since I would love to hear more.

Members Behind the Badge - Geoffrey and Kay Widmer
Some of our best speakers are our own members and Geoff and Kay Widmer certainly reinforced that comment. Isaiah's Member Behind the Badge would take a bit of beating but the Widmer's almost outdid him - but not quite. With Geoff and Kay we get "two for the price of one (almost)".  They have joined as Family Members.

Welcome to Rotary Amelia Anderson
The club inducted it's first new member this Rotary year, and the first ever on Zoom, when Amelia Anderson became a Rotarian at the club meeting on September 28th. Amelia moved to Hawthorn almost two years ago, and made enquiries via the club's website. Attendance at some club meetings since then, including one at Kooyong - a rare event these days - convinced Amelia to join.

A graduate of the University of Queensland and currently with JCurve Solutions, a digital technology company, Amelia has had considerable experience as an IT professional, in communications and information technology, including a period with Oracle and Hewlett Packard. Her past community service includes four years as President of the Mt Waverley Scout Group where her leadership and achievements contributed greatly to the strength of that Scout Group today.

Welcome to Rotary, Amelia. We are very pleased to be able to count you as a Rotarian and look forward to working alongside you to make a difference in the years to come.
27ForParkinson's - A Perfect Lockdown Activity
Unfortunately, the Parkinson's Walk in the Park has again been cancelled. During the pre-pandemic years the funds raised by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie BBQ in the City Square, were donated to Parkinson's Victoria. As Spring is upon us we now have the opportunity to be active with the goal of raising funds for Parkinson's Victoria.

I therefore invite you to join the Glenferrie Rotary Harriers, a rather optimistically named group with the aim of being active in some form for the first 27 days of October. Being active may include cycling, running, walking or merely reducing one's consumption of alcohol! So please click on the link to join the group and encourage friends, family and others to be part of the action. Also, specific information about joining as part of the team or donating only, can be seen when you press Read more..

Rotarians & the Deep Blue Sea

A wonderful world exists beneath the oceans and the seas of our planet. The colours of the coral and the many species of fish and other creatures are truly magic.  For scuba divers, every dive offers a new and exciting experience.

The International Fellowship of Rotarian Scuba Divers (IFRSD) was established in October 2009 and has more than 300 members worldwide.
