President's Message
Another busy week in Rotary. The Sumba Eye Program event at Grace Park was a resounding success. A capacity crowd of about 150 people were wined and dined and were educated about the program. There were loud auctions and silent auctions and raffles. Great prizes were bid for and people walked away with many bargains. While our Treasurer Thelma is still counting the returns it seems that we have greatly exceeded expectations. Well done to everyone involved.

Sumba Fundraiser - A Great Success
Friday night was a celebration of the Sumba Eye Program at Grace Park Hawthorn. The fundraiser was a sell out. Many thanks tor the selfless work by the Rotarians of Glenferrie and Kew - A good example of “service above self". Jonathan Shepherd from RC Kew used his great talent for the loud auction. Ian salek as MC was a good host for the night. Thanks for all who came and participated to make the night such a success. We had Rosaleen O'Brien on piano and Simon Messenger ending the night as DJ. A very hot night which reminded us of the heat over in Sumba. A special thanks to Thelma Hutchison and Cheryl Pisterman.

Sierra Leone Update: They're beginning to look a lot like toilets!
Thanks to the incredible efforts of PP Taplima Muana and President Danial Sama of the Rotary Club of Bo, Sierra Leone, Consultant Engineer Jonathan Bockerie of Njala University in Bo Sierra Leone, and Manager, the Aladura Primary School Buedu Tamba Lahai, work on the VIP toilets at the Aladura Primary School is proceeding apace. Despite supply challenges and the occasional flooding rainstorm, work is right on schedule with the handover of the facilities expected to take place mid-December.

The first block to be completed will be the boys toilets, which will also serve the girls via two dedicated cubicles while the girls toilet is under construction
The handover will be a celebration for the parents, children and staff at the Aladura School of the opening of their new toilets, of the power of friendship across international boundaries, and the joyful promise of youth. The opening of the toilets will launch the Aladura Primary School Hygiene Club, and a Rotary sponsored WASH training program for the teachers and students. The project is being delivered with the assistance of a District International Grant from

Rotary Contributes Funds to Polio Outbreak Response in Gaza
The recent detection of variant poliovirus type-2 isolates in environmental samples and the confirmation of a 10-month-old child who has contracted polio in Gaza is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. The ongoing crisis in Gaza has contributed to reduced routine immunization rates and an increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio. The crisis also poses a significant challenge to fully implementing disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns.

A humanitarian pause allowed a two-round polio vaccination campaign to begin in Gaza. The first round was successfully implemented from 1-12 September 2024 and vaccinated 559,161 children, or an estimated 95% of eligible children at the governorate level, according to independently conducted post-campaign monitoring.

Last Bulletin from Chris Raw - Editor

This is the last Bulletin prepared by me. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the bulletin the last few years. Because of the policy that a member must write up a club meeting, this has meant everyone in the club has provided a report for the bulletin. These reports were often incredibly detailed and summarised the speaker's talk in an interesting manner. Rotarian member's past experience in employment was often reflected in these summaries.

Thank you to the Presidents, Director's and other members who provided articles on their projects and other happenings around the club.

Finally, thanks to Richard Blakeman who was always available to assist with any problems I might have had.
