Presidential  Musings for the week
It was good for me to get back to work and a well-entrenched routine that I have followed for years. Patients are a priority, and I must give my expertise to them. So, in the 3 weeks sick leave I felt I was cast adrift and useless. So, I appreciate the angst and concern of all those stuck at home in this seemingly endless lockdown. My mental health did suffer.

“When people don't have a routine or structure to their day it can cause increased stress and anxiety, as well as overwhelming feelings, lack of concentration, and focus." RACHEL GOLDMAN, PHD

Having a regular routine can help you:
  • Lower stress levels
  • Form good daily habits
  • Take better care of your health
  • Feel more productive
  • Feel more focused

Vietnam Project Update
While student support continues, because of Covid we are waiting to commence three important projects:

- a partnership with Vietnam National University to assess water (quality and quantities) for the five communities now being supported by District 9800 Rotary clubs.

- an infant dental project with dentists from Melbourne applying fluoride paste on young children's teeth and training clinic staff, teachers and parents for sustainability.

- eye-screening in the five communities. Our partners, Optometry Vietnam, are the leading trainers of optometrists.

27ForParkinson's
At Present Glenferrie Rotary is taking part in the 2021 27ForParkinson’s free online event with a team entitled the Glenferrie Rotary Harriers. In last week's Bulletin, our members were invited to participate in this event and/or make a donation.

So, join our team and for 27 days from 01 October walk, run, cycle, work out (or abstain from alcohol perhaps) on behalf of the Parkinson’s community. Alternatively, you can sponsor an individual team member or the team. It is easy to join up or donate: just go to Parkinson's Walk Glenferrie Harriers, follow the instructions, promote your page to your friends and family members or make a donation.  Once you start your campaign on 01 October, you can monitor your progress and update your supporters.
Polio: The Big Picture
With World Polio Day taking centre stage this month, we thought it a timely opportunity to provide an overview of Rotary's polio eradication efforts to date.

What is Polio - Poliomyelitus, or polio, is a paralysing and potential fatal disease that primarily threatens children under the age of five. It invades the nervous system, potentially causing paralysis. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable.
History - Rotary conducted its first polio immunisation campaign in the Phillipines in 1979 and, based on its success, launched its PolioPlus program in 1985 with a goal to raise US$100 million to immunise the world's children against the debilitating disease. By 1988, Rotary members had raised US$247 million for polio immunisation efforts, which served as the catalyst for the WHO to adapt the resolution to eradicate polio in 1988.

ROTARY'S IMPACT ON LOCAL ECONOMIES
Rotary members train people to become resources for their community, offering networking activities, advice on new business development, and mathematics and financial management training.

Rotarians make amazing things happen, like:
(a) Breaking the cycle of poverty for women: Most of the women living in rural Guatemala do not have the collateral to get loans from regulated financial institutions. The Rotary Club of Guatemala de la Ermita helped 400 local women complete financial literacy courses so they could pool their money and fund their own microlending program.

Beyond Water

Peter and Sharon are the Co-Founders of BeyondWater, a charitable trust which alleviates poverty across East Africa through the provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. They have spent the last 9 years based in Nairobi, Kenya raising a team of nationals who oversee the many projects. Starting in 2007, BeyondWater has grown to an organisation that works across 10 countries and has assisted over 100,000 people every day to receive clean water. In addition, over 200 girls have gone through their leadership and mentoring program - The Girl Project.
