The inaugural MDIS was held 16-18 May in Adelaide. After some teething problems it was a success and over 300 delegates attended from our District 9800 and District 9510 which covers all South Australia, Northern Territory, a part of NSW and part of the corner country in Queensland. The venue was Morphettville Racecourse, and it is fair to say that the number of attendees was just right. District 9800 was well represented; there were people from all over even PNG.
At the Rotary club meeting on May 13th, the club was treated to a talk given by Rotary scholarship recipient Jasmine Elmolla on her role in migration law. Her present role is working in the Victoria Legal Aid in Melbourne, where she is responsible for protecting migrants’ rights and how they can address the law for visas and eligibility to stay in Australia. She has a particular interest in Migration and ensuring that migrants have access to legal services and a fair and just migration system.
Guest speaker Jazmine Elmolla is studying for her Master of Science in International Human Rights Law at Oxford University, under a Rotary scholarship part funded by The Rotary Foundation

At the Board Meeting on May 15th, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie approved a proposal by Foundation Director Joanne Shentu to contribute US$1,000 towards a Rotary Foundation Global Grant project in Israel. The project, known as the "Jerusalem Women Driving Health Together" initiative, will train thirty women in East Jerusalem – all Israeli, fifteen Jewish and fifteen Palestinian - to be medics, phlebotomists, and ambulance drivers, and to teach the Jewish women to speak Arabic and the Arabic women to speak Hebrew. The project, which is led by the Rotary Club of Redondo Beach in California and Rotary Avivtek in Israel, in partnership with Rozanna International, promotes peace, health and community development. The District 9800 Rotary Foundation Committee has also contributed District Designated Funds amounting to US$10,000 to the project.

The Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP) is a settlement program announced by the Australian Government in December 2021. The program is based on the Canadian model and is expected to support 1,500 refugees within the overall humanitarian allocation cap. CRISP will become permanent feature of Australia’s overall humanitarian program. Wendy and I hope to form a Community Supporter Group of ten people from the Rotary Club of Glenferrie and other local Rotary clubs.
In the interest of mixing things up a bit and potentially to attract new members to our vibrant Rotary club, you are encouraged to bring along a guest to any of our dinner meetings. Your guest may not initially have an interest in joining the club, but coming to a dinner meeting will provide an opportunity to meet new people, have good conversation and hear from a topical speaker. It may spark a curiosity to learn more about what we do and they may be excited to come along again.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Manager asks a young engineer fresh out of university, "And what starting salary are you looking for?" The engineer replies, "In the region of $150,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of six weeks annual vacation, 14 paid holidays, 12-months parental leave, full medical and dental, company matching your superannuation contributions to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a Lexus LX?" The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."
Ray Isaac joined the Rotary Club of Glenferrie in November last year, right before we wrapped things up for the Christmas break—so it’s been a bit of a slow start. But now’s the perfect time to really welcome him properly.
Ray’s got a great story to share, and the Member Behind the Badge night is the perfect chance to hear it. These evenings are always a favourite—it’s when we get to find out more about the amazing people in our club.
Come along to hear more about Ray—who he is, what he does, and what brought him to Rotary. It’s going to be a relaxed, fun night, and a true celebration of Rotary membership.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie acknowledges the traditional owners as the custodians of this land, recognising their connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Australia's First Peoples, and to their elders, past, present and future.
