Presidential Musings for the Week
Ahhhhh!!  Don’t you want to stand on your doorstep and yell at the top of your lungs in frustration about our state of affairs?  The reserved British, I am told stand on the doorsteps and clap each night.  The Italians sing.  Not much to clap or sing about.  It is what it is.  We cannot “fight it on the beaches….” but we can remain calm, wear masks and obey the government rules.  Whoever it is to blame, we are still in the situation of trying to get out of it.  We are all stoic people and will get through this pandemic in one piece.

However, what that “one piece” for our club, will look like will be interesting.  I have worried about the stagnation going on and that would appear a good reason to offer to run for the President’s role next year.  All active and honory members should have received an open letter from myself indicating my intentions.

Speaker: Sarah Garner, Walter & Eliza Hall Institute
The Glenferrie Rotary Club were fortunate to hear a presentation from Dr Sarah Garner on 8th September 2020.  Sarah is an infectious disease physician and medical microbiologist who is in the fourth year of a PhD programme at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute(WEHI).  She spoke about COVID-19 and outlined some of the research being conducted at the WEHI. There are several lines of investigation ranging from, studies of the wide variation in disease severity, to projects hoping to re-purpose existing drugs for treatment of COVID-19. The development of several projects within 9 months underscored the WEHI's ability to rapidly respond to the pandemic.

Wine & Cheese Night
We will be holding a social night again on Tuesday 15th September for all members and their partners.  We will be arranging members to be allocated into small groups so that social chatter becomes a little easier. It helps the organising team if you can advise your attendance to John Hudson prior to the meeting.  A formal invitation with a zoom address will be forwarded to all members on the morning of the meeting date.  We look forward to seeing you all in good form for a fun meeting.

Make-Ups are Your Entitlement!
Reminder regarding makeups

Just a reminder from the Secretary that if you attend meetings at other clubs or Rotary events such as the Cluster meeting with the DG, or take part in a Rotary service activity, you are entitled to a Make Up, which is counted towards your attendance record and the attendance record for the club. Your attendance record can be viewed at any time in 'My Clubrunner".

Please advise the Secretary, Peter Moore, of any events that qualify so that our records are accurate and up to date.
Rotary in Harmony
LoL
These lockdowns are getting annoying and quite frankly I’ve had enough.
I’ve discussed the matter over a cup of tea with the kitchen sink, and we both agree that the experience is draining.
I didn’t mention anything to the washing machine as she puts the wrong spin on everything.
Same with the fridge. He only gives cold shoulder.
I asked the lamp, but she couldn’t shed any new light on the situation.
The vacuum cleaner was rather rude and told me to suck it up Princess.
The threshold was no better, it suggested I get over it.
The carpet advised me to sweep my feelings under the rug.
But the fan was more upbeat and thought that the crisis would soon blow over.
The toilet looked a bit flushed and didn’t offer an opinion.
The wall didn’t say a word either, just gave me a blank stare.

Member Behind the Badge
Member Behind the Badge

Andrea Kimler is a vet, an environmentalist, a creative spirit and a Glenferrie Rotarian. The Member Behind the Badge talks are always much enjoyed, they are where we get to know just a little more about each other's incredible life experiences, our vocations, and whatever else we want to share and they are an important part of being a Rotarian. Come along and hear Andrea's story. Immediately after the Special General Meeting.
