On the 20th October, Mark Ellis was asked by DIK (Donations in Kind) to examine the ophthalmic gear donated to them. He was accompanied by Peter Stewart OAM (RC Kew and SEP Director) to look at what had been donated. Peter looked at all the glasses donated. The idea was to “junk” what was not suitable to send.

Interestingly, there were 4microscopes to look at.
One was “junked” since it had a broken fibre optic cable. Irreplaceable from age and design.
One was good for general surgery and plastics.
One was a good basic ophthalmic microscope - Good enough for cataract surgery
The last one has issues with its optics and cannot be sent until Dr Ellis can resolve the issues. He is in touch a technician and hopefully this issue will be resolved.
Importantly since this is a really good microscope with an assistant piece - good for teaching. So, it is worth the follow up. Sending it in its present condition would be a waste of time.
Dr Ellis learnt a term many years from Indian ophthalmologists he has dealt with. They call faulty equipment “junk from Jesus”. Nice but useless!!"
