Presidential Musings
Welcome to another week in Rotary.  It is sad to see so many of our club members stricken down with COVID. We all as a club are thinking of your health.

The board met last Tuesday in a reduced number since there were so many apologies, some of them because of their COVID afflictions. However, thanks to Cheryl and Rod coming on zoom at our face to face meeting we were able to have a quorum. One of our decisions because of recent events was to review the Rotary Code of Conduct. We always hear about the Four-Way test, however many are not aware of this

The Rotary Code of Conduct (formerly known as the Declaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions) provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

Merv Hughes Named as Celebrity Golfer for our Lift the Lid Golf day
Much loved Australian cricket legend Merv Hughes has been named as the celebrity golfer for our Lift the Lid Charity Golf Day at the famous Kingston Heath Golf Course on May 24th 2022. A native of Euroa, Merv started his career playing district cricket with Footscray in 1978–79. Footscray has subsequently named their main home ground after him; it is now known as the Mervyn G. Hughes Oval.

A right-arm fast bowler, he represented Australia in 53 Test Matches, taking 212 wickets. He played 33 One Day Internationals, taking 38 wickets. Not just a great bowler but also a useful batsman scoring two half-centuries in Tests and over 1,000 runs in all. Merv replaced Allan Border as an Australian selector from 2005 to 2010.

Merv is the Victorian patron of the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation, providing community-based health care for kids with cancer and raising funds for cancer research. Golfers who are competing in this magnificent Ambrose style tournament may well have the opportunity to play their round with Merv. But at least they will get to meet him. And that will be something to remember.

Thank you for donating your time, skills and your very presence in support of our fundraiser Merv. Your generosity will help enormously in our endeavour to raise funds for mental health research with lasting benefits to our community.
Luxury Escapes Donation Raises $4,000 for the club's Lift the Lid Promotion
Club Director Elizabeth Dumonic has announced that the magnificent holiday donated to the club in support of the Lift the Lid Charity Golf Day on May 24th has sold to a mystery buyer, raising $4,000 for Australian Rotary Health. The mystery buyer will enjoy a wonderful 7 night vacation at the luxurious Melia Phuket Mai Khao, Thailand in a one bedroom suite with outdoor bathtub. Valued at $5,187, the lucky buyer has made a considerable saving on an outstanding holiday experience, thanks to Luxury Escapes.

The Marketing Manager of Luxury Escapes, Andrew Eckersley, will join us at the club meeting on April 12th for A Celebration of Golf. In the meantime, keep your eye out for someone surreptitiously packing their suitcase with an extravagantly colourful  Hawaiian shirt. They may very well be the mystery buyer.

Thank you Luxury Escapes for your very generous donation.  It will go a long way towards funding research into an important area of mental health, with lasting benefits for our community.

Ukraine Support - Rotary Foundation
In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Rotary International has created an official channel for contributions to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts.

In just a little over a week, Rotary members and donors around the world, have contributed over $2 million to Rotary’s disaster response fund. These donations are designated for immediate-use grants that support relief efforts in #Ukraine and surrounding regions. Rotary districts in and around Ukraine may apply for grants of up to $50,000 each.

Sponsor a Child in Vietnam

Opportunity to sponsor a needy child in Vietnam
Through the RC Glenferrie relationship with the VoThan district of Vietnam and the great work that the associated rotary clubs do supporting this and other districts, there is an opportunity for individual members to support a needy child. Details of the opportunity follow and interested members can contact Mark Howlett for more information.

  • Funds are directed to the most needy children. The children are identified and prioritised by the Education Department and local People’s Committees as being in the most needy of circumstances.

  • It is life-changing.  $520 per annum will ensure that a child currently struggling to get to school will be able to commence an education and obtain a real opportunity to have a better life.
