Presidential Musings for the Week

Albert Einstein is quoted “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change”. My now retired accountant once told me when I was in the process of selling my practice and becoming an associate, that “the surest thing to count on to occur in life is change”. Life as we knew it is not going to be the same for many years. This pandemic is making us adapt to new ways of conducting our club via electronic media or being flexible with club meeting venues. We are intelligent enough to adapt and be flexible for changes brought upon us. I often wonder if we might end up being an “E Club” or a hybrid version of our Rotary E Clubs.

Hence, you will be aware that with present restrictions, Kooyong Tennis Club is not open for future meetings for the time being.  I thank club members for seeking out alternate venues if only to provide a relief from speaking into a computer microphone in our “trackie dacs”.

It's Back On - On September 12th!
The Family Fun Day to open the new playground at Yarra Bank Reserve is back on, only this time for Sunday September 12th, 2021. Event celebrants the Mayor, Cr Garry Thompson, and our District Governor Dale Hoy, and our joint MCs for the day, President Mark Ellis and Immediate Past President Rotary Club of Camberwell, Murray Anderson have all signalled their availability for the day. One change, the magician has magically changed identity and will appear suddenly at the playground as Tam the Magician.

So bring the kids, bring the family, bring the dog for an afternoon in the park for Rotary 100. Sunday September 12th, 12 noon - 3pm, Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn.
Scar Tree at Yarra Bank Reserve Testament to an Ancient Legacy
The Yarra Bank Reserve, site for the interactive play sculpture being presented to the community on September 12th as a gift from Rotary, is a beautiful park with an ancient history. The traditional land of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, who hunted and fished along the Yarra banks, the reserve contains an ancient scar tree. A scar tree or scarred tree, also known as a canoe tree and shield tree, is a tree which has had bark removed by Aboriginal Australians for the creation of bark canoes, shelters, weapons such as shields, tools, traps, containers or other artefacts.
Visitors to the park on September 12th for the Opening Ceremony and Family Fun day will be able to view the scar tree, and reflect on and pay respect to the families who lived, worked and played along these banks in a distant past.
Wording for Plaque Expresses the Strength in Unity
The theme for the new playground project was stated quite casually, early in the planning cycle, by Benjamin Gilbert of Agency of Sculpture, creators of the Rotary interactive play sculpture. Benjamin said: "The play sculpture is meant to demonstrate that when people work together they can create something magnificent". The plaque will be unveiled by the Mayor of Boroondara at the Family Fun Day on Sunday September 12th.
(The plaque here still bears the original date, August 8th. The event has been re-scheduled to September 12th, but the plaque may remain the same for good luck!)
Meeting Speaker - Tim Forcey
On 27 July our Club was privileged to hear a presentation by Tim Forcey, a chemical engineer who had worked for multi-national corporations but more recently has been involved in renewable energy research. His topic was the timely issue of “How to reduce your energy bills and stay warm”.

As well as covering the well-known factors of reducing drafts from doors and windows, appropriate window coverage, occluding the old-fashioned wall vents in the sub-ceiling area (these are now redundant unless we are still relying on solid fuel or gas-fired flame generating heating), and also where possible maximizing appropriate ceiling, wall and sub floor insulation.
