Presidential Musings
“They call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken.” Raymond Floyd.

With tomorrow being our big golf day, maybe the Musings should be devoted to the subject of golf! So, was Paul Harris a golfer? Not sure on that count but I am sure he would approve of the Fellowship that happens being out in the elements hitting a small ball along pristine fairways and straight into a small hole at the end. Sounds easy. I am told it is a good way to size up a person as to how honest he/she is in their game. Leather wedges are frowned upon.

So, tomorrow is our Lift the Lid golf day, which is our next major event for the club. It will be a great event for our club, which will have its meeting as a social event at the BBQ at Kingston Heath. Thanks for all those involved in organising, playing,  coming to the BBQ or just buying a raffle ticket. In all this fun, we mustn’t forget the great charity of Rotary Health is what we are supporting. Golf can be good or not so good for our mental health depending on how the ball rolls!!

Welcome to Rotary Wendy Cross
The club inducted it's 51st Active Member at the club meeting on May 17th, when President Dr Mark Ellis AM welcomed Wendy Cross into Rotary. Wendy is a special needs teacher with considerable experience in that field and has been admitted with the Vocational Classification 'Teaching'.

Pictured here with Rotary Mentor PP Thelma Hutchison and President Mark Ellis, Wendy spoke of how she came to contact the club regarding membership. A friend and colleague in Gippsland, who happens to be a Rotarian and a friend of Thelma's, learned of Wendy's planned move to Melbourne and strongly recommended that she contact Thelma regarding Rotary membership. The rest, as they say, is history and the club is very pleased that Wendy followed through.

A warm welcome to Rotary Wendy. We look forward to serving alongside you for many years to come, to Do Good in the World.

All set for Golf Day Tuesday
Everything is in place for the club's sold-out Lift the Lid Charity Golf Day on Tuesday. Robert and Miffy Hogan have been busy compiling the golfer's goodie bags containing gifts for each golfer courtesy of our generous sponsors. Robert and Miffy's commitment is so strong that they are storing the bags in their front bedroom until Tuesday. Where are you going to sleep Robert?

The club meeting next Tuesday will be at Kingston Heath Golf Club, commencing 5:45pm for 6:00pm. Bookings in advance were essential, and are now closed unfortunately. But if you have managed to secure a booking, you are sure to enjoy a great night out. Click here for the Program.

Community Service Project
Last Tuesday Rowan McClean from the North Balwyn Rotary Club spoke to us about their program of practical support for the many hundreds of Afghan refugees who have arrived in Melbourne during the past few months.

He has made contact with an Afghan community group in the Dandenong area and the North Balwyn Club members, together with friends, have provided all manner of items necessary for establishing a home. They have provided bedding, furniture, linen, white goods, crockery, glassware and a whole range of kitchen utensils. In addition, clothing, toys, books, sewing machines and old computers have been supplied.

Rowan has arranged a depot for collection of donated goods prior to transportation to a storage location in Noble Park. So far they have delivered 82 van loads of  donated goods, which is quite extraordinary. The local depot is a garage at the Koonung Heights Uniting Church, 417 Belmore Road.

MentorMatch

Many of you will know of our partnership with Mentor Match,  a project with Rotary Central Melbourne and the District developed over the last 12 months.  A pilot involving 50 Rotarians (mentors and mentees in District 9800 and Canada) is currently underway before scaling the program across Victoria.

The launch of this program will take place on Thursday 26 May at the State Library and I encourage everyone who is interested in this program to come and hear more about it.  The event will bring together Rotary Districts in Victoria partnering with Mentor Match and the Victorian Government. And we are very fortunate that the Guest Speaker at the event will be Zondwa Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson and it will be a privilege to hear him speak.
