Presidential Musings
Our founder Paul Harris is quoted as saying “Rotarians are very much more favourably disposed toward action than they are toward words.”  However, he did see the value of clubs meeting in fellowship on a regular basis (originally it was expected to have a 100% attendance).

Coming to the meetings aids you to get to know your other members, there is a better chance of forming a basis to imagine and implement a new project or to gain knowledge to participate in an already active project.

It has become necessary now that we are out of the COVID isolation that our club needs to reflect on getting back to the regular way our club is conducted. I note that many, particularly new members, are not turning up to the General Meetings. Our Club Constitution requires a minimum 50% attendance rate.

Speaker 10th May - Rowan McClean

Rowan McClean kindly addressed our meeting of 10 May 2022 regarding his involvement with resettling Afghan Refugee families into the community. He and his colleagues have been involved in placing Afghan refugees into temporary accommodation, as well as aiming to provide them with assistance not provided by the Government.

Storage space has been arranged for donated goods and meal packs have been arranged by Rotary Club Canterbury. An Accounting firm donated 30 Computers after a computer upgrade.

Collection of donated clothes etc from Rotarians and friends is now taking place and so far 3000 refugees have been settled into Melbourne.

District Conference Summary - Albury 2022
After managing the challenge of COVID, in just over three and half months the District Conference was successfully held in Albury in late April with over 350 people to celebrate and “Get Together in Albury”.

From the Smoking Ceremony which opened our proceedings through to the Pipe Band which closed our Conference, the program presented a diverse range of guest speakers, entertainment, and opportunities for Rotarians to connect and collaborate. The Albury Mayor (Kylie King) along with the State Minister (Justin Clancy) and Federal Politician (Sussan Ley) made sure that we received a very warm welcome following a rousing fanfare from the Albury Scots Grammar Pipe Band.

MentorMatch

Many of you will know of our partnership with Mentor Match,  a project with Rotary Central Melbourne and the District developed over the last 12 months.  A pilot involving 50 Rotarians (mentors and mentees in District 9800 and Canada) is currently underway before scaling the program across Victoria.

The launch of this program will take place on Thursday 26 May at the State Library and I encourage everyone who is interested in this program to come and hear more about it.  The event will bring together Rotary Districts in Victoria partnering with Mentor Match and the Victorian Government. And we are very fortunate that the Guest Speaker at the event will be Zondwa Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson and it will be a privilege to hear him speak.
