Presidential Musings for the Week

Hello in Isolation.  I presume a lot of you now know what it is like to be in solitary confinement!  For others, maybe what retirement would be like with the idea of “married for life but not for lunch”!  This time gives you a chance to always do the hobby that you were going to take up from online Yoga, learning a musical instrument to reading “War and Peace”.  Lucky for me I am a “essential service” but so is the local liquor store, while hairdressers are now out!

Congratulations to member Chris Raw for completing her Masters of IT in isolation land.  Great to see people doing good while stuck at home.  A good example of turning this isolation time into good use.  Scratching my head to think of novel ideas for Club meetings.
Just nice to see those familiar faces popping up on my computer screen.
Means a lot to me that you are all still tuning in.  If anyone has an idea to play out on this meeting platform, please come forward (so to speak).

A Big Rotary Blast from the Past
In the early ‘80’s ( I cannot remember which year) Glenferrie and Hawthorn Rotary clubs shared an Exchange Student from Norway. Her name was Kristin Engvig and she hailed from Kristiansund, and her father was a pharmacist.

We  started Kristin at Fintona in Balwyn but after awhile we transferred her to Swinburne where she was much happier. The Sutherland family hosted her for 3 months during which time she and another Norwegian student treated us to many Norwegian culinary delights. Kristin was a model Exchange Student and we kept up our relationship after she went home.

This article first appeared in The Networker on August 8th 2020.

Having grown up in Boroondara, Glenferrie Rotarian, John Hudson, has been devoting his retirement years to volunteering in the community that provided he and his family so many benefits.

A Fellow of CPA Australia and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, John’s career included the role of Company Secretary at McIlwraith Davey Ltd, which employed over 7,000 people, and finally as Finance Manager at Trinity Grammar until 1990.

Rotary International Cause 'Saving Mother and Child'
Rotary International is dedicated to six areas of focus (causes) to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. The first cause we are investigating is Saving Mother and Child.

1. SAVING MOTHER AND CHILD

An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.

HOW ROTARY MAKES HELP HAPPEN

Rotary provides education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.

How a hole in Mum’s kitchen table led to a fifty year career in media
Respected throughout the Media industry, John has been a popular and in-demand fixture of
the Melbourne TV, Radio, Advertising and Corporate worlds for almost 40 years. Perhaps
best known as the Voice of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and the man that told excited contestants on
the ‘New Price Is Right’ to ‘Come on Down”, John, or ‘Deeksie’ as he is widely known, was
also the face of Tattslotto and Powerball draws and the Host and Compere of ‘Family Feud’.
In recent years Myer has also selected a very proud John to narrate the iconic ‘Christmas
Window’ display at their Bourke St. store.
