Presidential Musings for the Week
Well – All I can say is that I am very disappointed not to have the Changeover proceed due to the COVID-19 restrictions. I thank John Hudson for his quick thinking and work to get us a new date. Hopefully the timing will be better.  The new Board will take over on July 1st and I will get to introduce them on our Changeover now for July 13th.  Note this is a Tuesday and so you will not have to avoid black cats and other bad omens.

It is amazing how many web sites are devoted to coping with disappointment with the COVID restrictions.  The Red Cross suggests
  1. Acknowledge the disappointment – Yes - It is painful and a lot of reorganising.
  2. Accept the new normal – We just must face up to the reality of our situation.
  3. Look out for others – We are all feeling flat.  Let’s party on July 13th!!
  4. Do things – Precisely what we are doing – switching to plan B, to delay to July 13th.

Get Ready for the Big Family Day Event at Yarra Bank Reserve - Sunday August 8th 2021
Construction of the new  Yarra Bank Reserve Playground is well underway with the first step being the installation of the unique Rotary Interactive Play Sculpture which will be the centrepiece of the new playground. With much more work still to be done, the sculpture already dominates this beautiful park and surrounds.

The playground will be officially opened by the Mayor of Boroondara Garry Thompson and Rotary District 9800 Governor 2021-2022 Dale Hoy at a Family Fun Day on Sunday August 8th 2021, commencing at midday. Keep your eye out for more information and be sure to spread the news and save the date.

Club Meeting - Myeloma Awarness - Peter Allen & Adrian Campbell

We were given an informative talk on the growing insidious, and fatal, disease called Myeloma, a type of blood cancer of the bone marrow.

Myeloma is diagnosed in 38 Australians every week, with a life expectancy of seven to eight years. There is no known cause, it is not heredity, and there is no known cure at this time. There are a number of treatment options, including new antibody drugs and marrow transplants which may prolong a patient's life.

The Bread Run Needs You
The Salvation Army Bread Run urgently needs new volunteers for the current roster to take us from June 10th through to the end of July.

This project calls for two volunteers to go to Bakers Delight in Riversdale Road, Camberwell, collect unsold bread which is generously donated by Bakers Delight, and deliver it the Salvation Army Camberwell.

If you can help, please sign up on the Volunteer Signup List on the club website via this link:

If you are not a club member but would still like to help, please email project leader Chris Raw directly. Chris will be pleased to add your name to the list.
Become a Centurion in our Centenary Year
Rotary Districts in Australia and New Zealand initiated the Centurion Program many years ago as an easy way for all Rotarians to support their charity, The Rotary Foundation.

The program asks members to make a yearly contribution of AUS$100 or more to the Foundation’s Annual Fund. That’s about $2 per week.

With Rotary celebrating 100 years in Australia and New Zealand, how about becoming a Centenary Centurion!

District Changeover - July 10th 2021

We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.

Hence the District Changeover has been moved to Saturday 10 July.  Same details, same venue, same time.  If you are unable to attend on this new date please contact Jane Pennington (jane.pennington@rotary9800.org)  to arrange a refund.  If you have not yet booked, please do so and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues.

Lift the Lid - October 5th 2021
The “Lift the Lid” event for our club is going to be held by Elizabeth Dumonic and her committee on October 5th, 2021.  This  is our annual commitment to mental health.

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australian Rotary Health’s National annual fundraising day for mental health research.

it has now been extended to all Rotary Clubs across Australia.

Each year approximately 1-in-5 Australians will experience a mental illness and in order to help future generations of young Australians, we need to look ahead through research and find out how we can prevent this type of illness occurring.

More details will follow in the upcoming bulletins with details about this worthwhile event.

International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians

The International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians was formed after a group of French Rotarians developed the idea of having at least 100 Rotarians competing in the Paris Marathon during Rotary’s Centennial year in 2005. The Fellowship was chartered the following year at the Berlin Marathon and since then, the group has met annually somewhere around the world to participate in a long distance running event.

Marathon running is a popular sport throughout the world with many countries having annual events. For this reason the International Marathon Fellowship of Rotarians has many countries from which to choose when organising a place where its members can stay, compete in a marathon event and enjoy hospitality, friendship and local tourism.

LoL
  1. I got my husband a fridge for his birthday. His face lit up when he opened it.

  2. Why were they called the Dark Ages? Because there were lots of knights.

  3. My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.

  4. Q: Is Google male or female?
A: Female, because it doesn't let you finish a sentence before making a suggestion.

  5. In a Catholic school cafeteria, a nun places a note in front of a pile of apples, "Only take one. God is watching." Further down the line is a pile of cookies. A little boy makes his own note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
