Presidential Musings
I buried my mother a couple of days ago. At 90 she had “lived a good life”. Contemplating on how to “live a good life” made me think of how Rotary gives people a chance to “live a good life” by allowing people to socialise and work within our community to improve both our minds and of the lives of others. Certainly, I would never have met or had the opportunity to work with such lovely energetic people as the club members of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie and other Rotarians as well, if I had not made that big decision to join our club.

So, it was with great pleasure to induct Sudha Saina to our flock. We wish her every success and that she finds the contentment that I have in my work within this club and our clusters.  As usual, the talk on the Rail Trails had me in raptures and wanting to go explore ASAP.

Welcome to Rotary Sudha Saini
The club welcomed Sudha Saini to Rotary at the club meeting on February 15th, 2022, and a welcome addition to the Rotary ranks she is. Sudha, who lives in Hawthorn and was introduced to the club by Geoffrey Widmer, has been admitted with the vocational classification 'Journalism'. With her background in writing, the club has added to its growing list of tech savvy story tellers! Sudha's Rotary mentor is Geoffrey Widmer.

A very warm welcome to Rotary, Sudha. We are looking forward very much to working with you in the years ahead, serving to change lives.
Club Meeting Report: Victorian Rail Trails - Steven Kaye
Guest speaker Steven Kaye (left), pictured here with meeting chair Elizabeth Dumonic. Darren McClelland of Rail Trails Australia and avid cyclist and Club President Dr Mark Ellis AM, entertained and inspired the meeting on February 15th with tales of adventure on the romantic and historic old rail trails of Australia
Steven has a lifetime interest in railways, cycling and ‘the great outdoors’. He began using Victoria’s rail trails with his family for many years, enjoying the history, natural environment and safety it provided. Consequently, he joined the Rail Trails Australia committee in 2008 to become more involved and hopefully improve/complete the trail network.

RORP News - Kew Playground Now on its way to Fiji
Rotarians from the Rotary clubs of Glenferrie, Hawthorn and Canterbury combined to harvest the playground at Victoria Park Kew on February 15th 2022. The recycled equipment is destined for a children's play area somewhere in Fiji.

This week Glenferrie Rotary, along with Hawthorn and Canterbury Rotary Clubs, successfully removed the Victoria Park North Playground in Kew on Tuesday 15th February.

I wish to thank our Rotary Team of Mark Howlett for organising the “ Mark-Up” of the Equipment on Thursday 10th February in preparation for the playground dismantling. This session is critical so that the recipients have a “road-map” on which to follow to re-assemble the playground  again when it gets to its new owners. The documentation was provided by Bob Allardice Project Co-Ordinator, RORP, Districts 9810, 9800 & 9790.

RIMERN Making a Difference
Glenferrie Rotarians Paul Sheckleton (second from left), Geoffrey Widmer and Michael Hills completed a shift at RIMERN on Thursday, bringing help and comfort to people in need. Also there was our Past President Thelma Hutchison, missing from the photo.

Four intrepid Glenferrie Rotarians completed another shift at RIMERN on Thursday February 17th, making a difference for people in need. RIMERN (Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network) was formed by Rotary Prahran in collaboration with other clubs in District 9800 as a Rotary Centenary project. Through its facility in Prahran, RIMERN collects furniture and household goods and distributes it to families located in inner Melbourne who are in need. Truly Serving to Change Lives.

First time volunteering experience with  RIMERN
"Hands On" project.
I did my first volunteer shift at RIMERN (Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network) on Thursday and I was amazed at the volume of goods, size of the warehouse and value to recipients that this initiative provides. It's a great hands-on project and one that I hope new and not so new members will support. If you can free up a Thursday morning, do register on the roster link (through ClubRunner) and make a contribution to a great Rotary project. You will be one of four from our Club - it's a great way to get to know one another and I will definitely be back for more.

RIMERN is a multi-club Rotary project collecting household goods to donate to people in need. This is residential recycling at its very best. Clients may have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, be escaping war or persecution or have lost their home to disaster.

Rail Trails Australia
Rail Trails Australia

Rail trails follow the routes of former railways. They cut through hills, over embankments and across gullies and creeks. Most have a gravel or dirt surface and are great for walking, mountain bikes and horses. Some are sealed and are great for touring bikes too. Dr Steven Kaye, Committee Member, and Darren McClelland, Regional Representative will inspire you with their passion for cycling these old trails, and the adventures that lie therein.
