President's Message
What an inspiring talk from Andi from Sumba last Tuesday (10 September). It was a bit of an eye opener for me. I was generally aware of our Sumba mission relating to eyesight but had no idea about the malaria and leprosy programs. It was good to see that the malaria program is having marked success in reducing the number of malaria cases. In relation to Sumba don’t forget to book in for the Sumba fund raising event on 22nd November 2024.

Club Meeting Report - September 10th - Pak Hapu Ammah (Andi)
On last Tuesday night we were entertained with an in-depth look at some of the major projects that the Sumba Foundation is involved in. We had Pak Hapu Ammah (Andi), originally from East Sumba speak to us. His CV states that he graduated with a nursing degree in Bali, with support from The Sumba Foundation. Currently, he is in Melbourne, pursuing a master’s degree in public health, with the support of the government, and he expects to graduate in June 2025. He hopes to put his teaching to good use in Sumba upon his return.

Plaque for toilet blocks at the Aladura Primary School in Buedu, Sierra Leone.
As most of you are aware we have been working for what seems like a long time on the design for the toilet blocks at the Aladura Primary School in Buedu in the far East of Sierra Leone. The design work is now completed, Contractors have been engaged and the construction work will commence in the next couple of weeks. The toilet blocks will be built in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bo in Sierra Leone whom we have been working with for many months now.

The photo below shows the plaque that will be fixed to each toilet block to show Rotary’s involvement in the project.

Message from the Secretary-General of the United Nations for International Day of Peace
Everywhere we look, peace is under attack.
From Gaza, to Sudan, to Ukraine and beyond we see:
Civilians in the firing line;
Homes blown apart;
Traumatised, terrified populations who have lost everything – and sometimes everyone.
This catalogue of human misery must stop.
Our world needs peace.
Peace is the ultimate prize for all humanity.
And as this International Day of Peace reminds us – the solutions are in our hands.
Rotary Peace Monument, Wagga Wagga. Wagga Wagga was the first city in the World to become a Rotary Peace City in February, 1993

Rotary commits funds to polio outbreak response in Gaza

The recent detection of variant poliovirus type-2 isolates in environmental samples and the confirmation of a 10-month-old child who has contracted polio in Gaza is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

The ongoing crisis in Gaza has contributed to reduced routine immunization rates and an increased risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio. The crisis also poses a significant challenge to fully implementing disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns.

Rotary has been leading the global effort
to eradicate polio since the 1970s
