Thank you to incoming President Helena for stepping in when I was unable to attend last Tuesday. By all reports a great time was had by all, notwithstanding that the scheduled speaker was ruled out by illness. It shows the Club will be in safe hands moving forward and will no doubt grow and prosper under her leadership.
The big news of the week is that our DFAT grant application for the new Sierra Leone project has been successful. The project will install a solar-powered water storage and gravity-fed reticulation system to improve the lives and the school experience of the students. The project was grant dependent as, while a contribution was in our budget, the whole cost was not within our limits. The International Service team has once again done a fantastic job. It is quite amazing what one little Rotary club can do.
The new International Service project in Sierra Leone will install a solar powered water storage and reticulation system for the Aladura Primary School in Buedu, similar to this one installed in the Philippines by the Rotary Club of Werribee
The club meeting on Tuesday April 29th will be something a little different. We won't be meeting at Kooyong. Instead we will be assembling at the main warehouse for the Rotary Inner Melbourne Relief Network (RIMERN), located at the corner of Lincoln St and Moreland Road, East Brunswick, to learn more about this hugely successful Rotary program, supported by The Rotary Club of Glenferrie among a number of other clubs. RIMERN is a multi-club Rotary project operating in Inner Melbourne, providing furniture, appliances & homewares to welfare agency clients who have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, refugee displacement and other crises.
Following the tour of RIMERN, Glenferrie Rotarians will party on at the nearby Darebin RSL, 402 Bell St, Preston. RIMERN is tangible evidence of the power of Rotary to make a difference. To register, click here!
The District Learning and Engagement Forum, scheduled for May 4th 2025, will introduce incoming club leaders and office bearers to the broader Rotary picture, the stragetic goals for District 9800, the resources available to support our club, and provide ideas for future club projects. Attendees at the Forum will meet the incoming District Governor Peter Shepheard and his District Support Team and provide the opportunity for networking with other Rotarians in our District. Essential for office bearers, the Forum is also a powerful introduction to Rotary for new members, or any member who wants to expand their understanding of Rotary and Rotary engagement.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie has once again nominated to host a Rotary Global Grant Scholar from Japan, with the club's nomination submitted this month to the Rotary Foundation for consideration. More details will be released as they become available. It is expected that the successful scholar will commence their studies in Melbourne in mid-2025. Club Foundation Director Joanne Shentu will lead a team of Glenferrie Rotarians who will act as hosts and mentors to the student. Please let Joanne know at a club meeting if you would like to be part of the fun hosting the club's assigned student.
Rotary Post Graduate Global Grant Scholarships, valued from US$30,000, support students who are undertaking a post graduate degree at a major university in support of one of the seven focus areas as defined by The Rotary Foundation. The student to be hosted by the club this year is expected to be enrolled at the University of Melbourne. More to come.
The club's successful hosting of Rotary Foundation Global Scholar Hikaru Sato in 2023-2024 has inspired a second Global Scholar hosting nomination for 2025
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie extends its heartfelt condolences to President Peter Moore and his family on the passing of Peter's father on Tuesday April 22nd, at the age of 98. The loss of a beloved parent and grandparent marks a profound moment in life, bringing to a close a chapter filled with treasured memories and lasting bonds. We honour a life well lived and a legacy that endures through family and community.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Peter and his family during this time of remembrance and mourning.
In the The Glenferrie Rotarian published on April 18th 2017, President Carol Benson thanked all members for their enthusiastic participation in the Setting the Course strategic planning workshops, which formed the foundation for a significant and successful transformation of the club. The Easter Bunny had been a big hit at the Boroondara Farmers Market, attended by 1,255 patrons and 55 stallholders. And all tickets for the Sumba Eyes are in Your Hands dinner dance had been sold in yet another outstanding fundraiser for this major club project.
