So, when is a punch in the face acceptable? It would appear Hollywood, that reflects the “good” in society also has double standards, where an Oscar Winner can get away with unacceptable behaviour! It is never acceptable to abuse another via violent or verbal assault. No matter what the grievances, Will Smith demonstrated the worst in our society. A bad role model for our youth. Alopecia is not a laughing matter, but a dignified approach of verbal rebuttal would seem a civilized person’s path of reply. I hope our youth, who idolise these “actors” will see through his ego driven error.

We appear to have many differences within our club, and I welcome the diversity. Please remember that everyone has an opinion and no matter how diverse, we need to let them air this. However verbal misuse of words can lead to embarrassment and even “assault” in a legal sense.

Reconciliation Begins by Acknowledging the Truth
The truth can be unpalatable, but if we are truly to reconcile with those among us who have been wronged, we must firstly acknowledge the reality of the injustice and the cause of their suffering. Take a few minutes to listen carefully to this TEDx address by Aboriginal Australian Sheila Humphries. It will move your soul.

Oh, what a night oo-oo what a night
Elvis may have left the room, but everyone else stayed until quite late at the clubs exceptional, annual BBQ on the Terrace at Kooyong on Tuesday night. The catering crew at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club excelled themselves with a scrumptious offering of BBQ delights that was so popular it will go into the club's 50 year history book, currently on the drawing board.
A big thank you to head chef Babu, originally from Nepal but now a long term Melburnian, and everyone at Kooyong LTC for a fabulous evening. And a big thank you to Lynette Spencer, who organises this event every year, and every year it gets better and better. Thank you Lynette. Thank you Babu. Thank you umpires. Thank you ball kids. As Elvis would have said: " Oh, what a night oo-oo what a night. It was it really was such a night."

If, as a new member, you are still to decide to experience your first Rotary Conference, it is not too late to book for Albury on the Anzac Day weekend 22 to 24 April.  The organisers are offering a further incentive - the opportunity to win one night's free accommodation if you book before 06 April - but places are running out - as shown in the PDF emailed from DG Dale Hoy.  And the rate for the conference remains at $330.00 for first time attendees.

RIMERN Wine Fundraiser: Purchase a Commercial Van for Collection Operations
Rotary Glenferrie is an active member of the RIMERN group ( Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network). RIMERN collects and distributes household goods ( bedding, tables, kitchenware, white goods, appliances) for individuals and families in need.

A critical need for RIMERN is to purchase a commercial Van to give them the capability and flexibility to collect households goods offered. They need to raise funds to buy the Commercial Van and have organised an online WINE FUND RAISER through an established “on-line” company called Prospect Wines, with the  wines selected by Peter Fergusson whom many of you will know from his Fergusson Wines (Dixons Creek) days. Peter is still a wine  consultant, so they have quality in mind here in selecting the wines for us.

Ukraine Support - Rotary Foundation
In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Rotary International has created an official channel for contributions to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts.

In just a little over a week, Rotary members and donors around the world, have contributed over $2 million to Rotary’s disaster response fund. These donations are designated for immediate-use grants that support relief efforts in #Ukraine and surrounding regions. Rotary districts in and around Ukraine may apply for grants of up to $50,000 each.

Youth Exchange is Back!
Youth Exchange is one of the oldest programs of Rotary International (RI). It had been operating in its current form as a long-term exchange program for over sixty years until the pandemic caused the program to be suspended by RI for the 2021-22 Rotary year.

The suspension by RI is due to be lifted from July 2022. The program is one which is life-changing for those outbound and inbound student participants. Host families and the host clubs gain enormously from interacting with the exchange students they host, and life-long friendships develop. Hosting an inbound exchange student brings with it benefits to the clubs such an added vibrancy and excitement and hearing from the student at club meetings about his or her activities during the previous week adds a further interesting agenda item.

LEXOPHILES
"LEXOPHILE" describes those with a love for phrases such as "you can tune a piano, but you tuna fish", "to write with a broken pencil is pointless." An annual competition is held by the New York Times for the best original lexophile. Here are some examples.
1. I changed my iPod's name to Titanic. It's syncing now.
2. England has no kidney banks but it does have a Liverpool.
3. Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes.
4. This girl today said she recognised me from the Vegetarians CClub, but I'd swear I've never met herbivore.

A Celebration of Golf

In the lead-up to the club's major project this year, the Lift the Lid Charity Golf Day at Kingston Heath Golf Course to raise funds for mental health research, come along and enjoy a bevy of speakers and find out how and why they are supporting this major fundraising effort. The speakers panel will be led by Steffan Scutti, the Australian Long Drive Champion and member of the Australian Long Drive Team. Whether you are a regular golfer, or just an innocent bystander, come along and find out just why people play golf in the first place! And how to get the most distance from the tee between you and that little white ball!
