Geoff Widmer was contacted by Kerry Salinger, a resident at 1A Munro St, Hawthorn East (Housing Commission), requesting to have a garden established. The Community Service Committee agreed that it would be a worthwhile project as we felt it would improve the morale and health of the residents by giving them a pleasant area to sit in and enjoy.
On 1st May, I took the project over and organised twelve free plants from Bunnings Hawthorn, 3 ½ cubic metres of soil from Fulton’s Garden Supplies (at cost, no delivery charge) and three cubic metres of free mulch from Same Day Tree Works.
In three days, over three weeks (due to delivery schedules) we:

- Removed a dead bush, transplanted a grevillea and built deep garden beds with the soil (14th May).

- Planted camellias, rhododendron, daisies, magnolia, lemon tree, gardenias, gum tree, passionfruit vine (all from
Bunnings) plus twenty other plants that had been sitting in pots (15th May).
- Covered the whole garden area that we’d created with mulch plus much of other garden areas (5th June).
My thanks go to the wonderful team who got it done - Christine McCann, Paul Shekleton, David Fallick, Garfield Lee, Simon Messenger and Alex Marshall. Two of the residents, Ray and Tom, also helped. Ray on all three days and Tom with the mulching.
Kerry is absolutely thrilled with the job! It’s given her and Tom an ongoing project. She is buying more plants, including bulbs which will look beautiful in spring, and Tom has built a border around the whole garden with the timber that Christine has sourced free of charge. They love sitting under the oak surrounded by the garden.
It’s great to know that this project has made a positive impact. (Kerry was Schapelle Corby’s lawyer!)
Christine and I presented Hannah at Bunnings Hawthorn and Ciara and Kelsie at Same Day Tree works with a Certificate of Appreciation from our club on Wednesday, 11th June.
They were all most appreciative and asked for a copy of the report on the project. I will send them our next Bulletin that will have the report.
