A posse of Glenferrie Rotarians, along with some partners, a total of 25, descended upon Bendigo for the “Gathering in the Goldfields”, as the Rotary 9800 Conference 2024 was designated. The merriment on Friday 12th April 2024 started with Mark Ellis hosting drinks in the refined cellar of the Ernest Hotel. While not all could attend, those who did enjoyed true fellowship over a nice drop of red. Before long, we found ourselves in the splendid historic townhall of Bendigo, which has been declared one of the finest in Australia, for the Welcome Event.
We all shuddered upon learning that demolition of this awesome building was once saved only by a single council vote. Having enjoyed moorish canapes and mingled a little, it was off to the Rifle Brigade Hotel for our Club Dinner where we also hosted Rotary Hawthorn and two members from Rotary Rochester.
The serious stuff happened over Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th April 2023 at the Ulumbarra Theatre – amazing how an old goal can be re-purposed into such a wonderful event venue. We heard inspirational presentations, from a vast array of speakers, on topics that are dear to our hearts as Rotarians, and at times, it was very emotional. However, there were also light-heartened moments – for one, Costa kept us laughing as he delivered some powerful messages - and the local / regional young talent, who entertained us with their song and music, was incredible. A nod also has to go to the superb MC, David Mann, who wove many fascinating stories around each presentation.
While there were many highlights over this Conference weekend, just too many to mention all, the following one, had all Glenferrie Rotarians, apart from a theatre full of others, clapping and cheering in their loudest voices, when Richard Blakeman was honored with the prestigious Citation for Meritorious Service by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation. Congratulations, Richard, so well done and deserved!
