“Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence win championships” – Michael Jordan

Hence, we need your participation to come to the RC Glenferrie Changeover June 14th. See below but please book.

Winter is coming – a famous quote from “Games of Throne” for some but also heralding a close of another Rotary Year and the exciting beginning of a new year for our club under the strong leadership of Teresa Liu. BUT there is a month to go and so you will have to be content with my reign for a few more weeks!!  I hope that I have lived up to the Rotary ethics. Trying to learn what a leader is about - Maybe one of my thoughts are expressed thus “A leader is best when people barely know he exists…when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say: We did it ourselves”.  Lao-Tzu.

I have always admired a Winston Churchill quote – “We make a living by what we get, but a life by what we give”. However, I have always stated that “In volunteering, you usually get more than what you give”.  Mark Ellis
Fantastic members moment by Paul Shekleton last Tuesday. Interestingly he is tied up with white markers at the Farmer’s Market!! I guess it takes all types. However, he revealed in himself the extreme intellect and dedication to make his career work. Also, importantly he pointed out that he could never have achieved his goals without the backing of his life partner Caralyn. No truer word spoken.

New members.  Our second family Dr Weranja Ranasinghe and Mahroo Parsi have joined our club. Typical Surgeon Weranja came late after being delayed in surgery. Life for a doctor is often like this and brought back memories of many late hours for me in the past. I was always taught that medicine doesn’t take a break for the weekend – so discipline is important if you want to be a compassionate doctor like Weranaja obviously is. Not to be left out but we expect Mahroo will be an important member of our family in the future. Congratulations to our new family members– Let’s all dip in and welcome them.

Board Meeting – Is tomorrow. There is a lot of activity around membership. Please be advised that I am co-hosting Membership with Thelma and will be reviewing all club member’s commitment to our club in the new year. I would recommend that all members look at our website and explore it. Our constitution and bylaws are hidden in there. As Richard pointed out “it is easy”.  Click successively on
“> Member Area
  > Organization
    > Documents
      > Club Rules, By-Laws and Policies”
The constitution is being reviewed in the new year. Please watch for developments. Coming from the vibe at the District Assembly, we may be in for some big changes.

Changeover Date – Our Changeover is June 14th. Please place this date in your diaries for the big social event on our calendar. Many have booked already. This is a function not to be missed. Already the Mayor Jane Addis, local politicians and Boroondara Councillors have accepted to come. We just need YOU

District Changeover has been set for 25th June at 1200 am. It would be nice to have a team going to represent our club. Good introduction for newcomers to see the Rotary Machine in action. Bookings via Humanitix. See the Bulletin for details.

Camberwell Art Show – This year is to be held at the Advanced Technology Centre of Swinburne University. The RC of Camberwell had proposed a Cluster event on Monday June 27th from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. However, there are too many clashes with changeovers so we will have a club event there. The decision is now whether it is a Monday or Tuesday.

Entry fee is $15, and wine and cheese are provided.  It has been suggested that we could then meet at a local restaurant afterwards. The Board has decided that this should be supported instead of our last meeting for this Rotary Year on the 28th ofJune at Kooyong.  Please await details, we might hold our meeting there on the Tuesday.

Our 50th year celebrations.  In 2025, our club will be celebrating 50 years. We need to think about how we will approach the celebrations. Unofficially, Chris Tran and I are starting to think about how we should tackle this year. We still have 2 original chartered members – Don Moore and Ian Dobson to draw upon their experiences.
