Last week, I received an invitation from David Hobson, the president of the Rotary Club of Balwyn (BRC), to celebrate BRC’s 50th anniversary. BRC is a big name in the Rotary world within Australia and internationally, because it has run the famous Camberwell Sunday Market since 1976. The market has raised $14,000,000 to support a significant range of community and humanitarian projects.

I admire those Balwyn Rotarians who initiated the Camberwell Sunday Market four years after the club was chartered. They were certainly courageous as businesses in Australia were not permitted to trade on a Sunday back then. Moreover, I admire all Rotarians who have contributed their time and skills to the Camberwell Sunday Market over the past 46 years.

Rotary Club of Glenferrie will embrace its 50th anniversary in a couple of years. We have lots to celebrate and be proud of.  One of our legacies is the Boroondara Farmers’ Market (BFM), which was awarded the Best Farmers Market in Victoria in 2017, and has raised almost $1,900.000 for local and international projects since 2003. Including the continuing support for Education Chances. The BFM has grown from 12 markets a year to 28 now. It requires more commitment from our members and the friends of Rotarians. I want to thank all Glenferrie members for their enthusiasm and commitment to such a successful fundraising project. To quote American surgeon, writer, and public health researcher, Atul Gawande, ‘Success requires making hundreds of small steps go right – one after the other, no slipups, no goofs, everyone pitching in’.

D9800 Hands-on volunteering workshop held its first workshop for 2022-23 run by Service Director, Lili Teichman, on Saturday 23 July at Malvern Golf Course. Thanks, Rod Smith and Garfield Lee for your participation. It’s always good to see DG Amanda Wendt and share experiences with fellow Rotarians within D9800.
