The Rotary Club of Glenferrie mourns the passing of Past President David Sutherland, who died peacefully on May 27th, in his 90th year.

David joined the club in July 1976, during its inaugural year, under the Vocational Classification of Food Catering. A dedicated Rotarian, David embodied the values of Rotary throughout his many years of service. He served with distinction as Club President in 1984–85 and was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow. Upon his retirement from active membership, he was made an Honorary Member in appreciation of his lasting contribution.

Our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies are with his wife Jenny, his children Scott, Kym, and Michael, and his extended family.

In accordance with David’s wishes, the club has made a donation of $100 to The Rotary Foundation in his honour.

My Memories of David - PP Michael Berry

The Past Presidents Trio. David Sutherland, centre, is
flanked by good friends at Changeover, June 23rd, 2015
When my late, first wife Sue and I moved into Lyall Street Hawthorn in 1966 after selling a rural property we had one young boy (with two yet to come). It was a lovely area with many young families of a similar age and one of them was David and his young wife Jenny, living around the corner

In Urquhart Street, we quickly became good friends and shared many enjoyable times together, David loved good wines, he had Sutherland Cellars under the bridges in Flinders Street. He was a businessman trained by GJ Coles in their first Supermarket in Kew Junction. He had a catering business in High Street Kew. They had a beautiful 5 acres property at Wonga Park with spectacular views overlooking the neighbours winery and the distant hills. Following my marriage to Trish we loved seeing them when they moved to the Lumary Apartments nearby.

I enjoyed David’s jokes that he sent me on the computer and I will miss him. May you Rest in Peace.

Michael
