The traditional Glenferrie picnic kicked off 2023 on Tuesday, 31 January 2023 at the site of our Rotary 100 Playground at Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn. I love the club tradition of having a picnic at the first gathering in the new year. On a beautiful evening, sitting in scenic surroundings with fellow Rotarians and a friend of Rotary, we cooked, ate, and drank, with lots of chitchat and laughter. It’s Glenferrie’s family time, longing for a good year ahead. It’s a time to catch up, share the joy of the festive season, and make more good memories. Thank you, my fellow Rotarians, for coming along and sharing the love within your Rotary family. Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Now, as 2023 unfolds, what lies in ahead for Rotary Glenferrie in the first half of the year?

RI Convention Hosting Night Monday, 29 May at KLTC: It has been 30 years since Melbourne held the Rotary International Convention in 1993. The Host Organising Committee of the RI Convention is very excited to welcome Rotary members and guests to Melbourne again in 2023. Glenferrie will be combining with Rotary Hawthorn and Camberwell to host a RI Convention dinner on Monday, 29 May, at KLTC. We expect to have 100 International Rotarians, plus up to 120 local Rotarians from the three clubs. We will be calling for volunteers to assist with many roles for this activity soon. So, stay tuned.

Club Changeover Night 20 June at KLTC: The Board had its first meeting in 2023 on Tuesday, 7 February, at Auburn Hotel. Our next Changeover Night has been set for Tuesday, 20 June 2023. It'll be the night to celebrate the club's achievements over the past year. It’ll be the ceremony where the outgoing Club President formally inducts the incoming Club President into their role. The outgoing Club Board will be acknowledged, and the incoming Club Board will be introduced. Please mark down the date and don’t miss out.

Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Boroondara Farmers’ Market (BFM): 13 March 2023 will be the 20th anniversary of the BFM. The club and the BFM Committee have planned to have two activities to mark this occasion (a) the regular RCG meeting Tuesday, 14 March when we invite speakers involved in the early days and possibly someone to represent Education Chances. (b) the biggest, most successful possible BFM on Saturday, 18 March. The co-chairs of BFM, David Fallick and Wayne Worladge, have already broached the matter with Nickie Wainwright at Boroondara City Council (BCC). The club will seek as much promotion as possible from BCC, and we’ll make a successful day with entertainment for the loyal patrons of our BFM.

Club BBQ Night on the Terrace Tuesday, 28 March at KLTC: Annual BBQ on the Terrace at KLTC is a signature night for Glenferrie Rotarians. This year it will be on Tuesday, 28 March, at the Terrace of KLTC. A big thank-you to Lynette Spencer, who organises this event every year. She has made it get better and better every year. I am sure our members have been craving the fabulous night with a delicious offering of BBQ delights by the catering crew of KLTC. Please save the date and bring your family along.

Update of RORP from Geoff Widmer and Paul Shekleton:The RORP Cluster will organise three playgrounds to be harvested by the mid-year, (a) Grovedale Park at 29 Grovedale Road Surrey Hills; (b) Mary Mackillop Reserve at 38 Middlesex Road Surrey Hills; (3) Hays Paddock at 25-27 Longstaff Street Kew East. Geoff has made progress in communication with Dominic Mazza at Stonnington. Hopefully, the RORP project can expand into the Stonnington Council area.
