On Tuesday evening we were treated to a wonderful “Member behind the Badge” speech by Lindy Joubert. Lindy is an Honorary Senior Fellow in Architecture at the University of Melbourne and has been associated with Melbourne University for many years.
Lindy has a very impressive resume - her roles include:
  • Consulting at UNESCO Paris headquarters for three years - 2000-2003
  • In 2006 she was the Founding Director of the inaugural UNESCO Observatory at the University of Melbourne
  • Vice President World Craft Council Asia Pacific region from 2012 (more roles on the next page)

Lindy Joubert, President Peter Moore & Amelia Anderson
  • Director of the Asia Pacific Confederation for Arts Education1992-2000
  • Leading teams for Community Arts Development for various organisations
Lindy took us on a journey via a colourful presentation through some of the many countries she has worked in, including Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, Timor Leste, the Tiwi Islands, Mau Island in the Torres Strait and Bali to name a few. Further afield, she has been involved in projects in Uzbekistan in Central Asia, Kenya and India.

Lindy’s work in these countries involved building projects using local architecture and products to encourage arts and crafts and to promote mental health and wellbeing amongst other things.

Lindy explained that she got involved in the Architecture faculty at the University of Melbourne through her Artwork. Many of the architecture students came from engineering backgrounds and were not proficient at conceptualizing and drawing. Lindy is an accomplished artist and has had thirty-five national and international exhibitions of paintings, six in New York City. The Head of the Architecture Faculty was impressed by Lindy’s artwork and invited her to become a lecturer.

The Glenferrie Club Members were very interested in Lindy’s speech and would have liked to hear more about her extraordinary work – but sadly time ran out.

I understand Lindy is in the process of writing some books about her work so that could be a way for us to learn more about her very exciting and interesting life.

Thank you, Lindy, for sharing your fascinating story with us.
