Our speaker on Tuesday evening was St Catherines Y12 student, Nadia Mohamed. RCG sponsored Nadia to the 2024 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the University of Queensland in Brisbane held in January.

NYSF is a not-for-profit organization founded by Rotary in 1984, to encourage students entering Y12 in their love of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It is now an independent organisation, still supported by Rotary as well as by major sponsors, most Australian universities and Governments (both State and Federal).

Nadia couldn’t speak highly enough about her experience and how it has opened her mind to areas of science she hadn’t explored before.

Originally planning to study medicine Nadia’s experience at NYSF now has her thinking she will study bio medical technology. Nadia gave us examples of some of the group work she was involved in including mind control for immobile limbs; high bloom glucose levels measurements; use of nano particles to treat cancer; analysing blood samples to prove the identity of a murderer and the lasting impact of colonisation on the indigenous community, to name a few.

She also met Tegan Taylor, who was Dr Norman Swan's partner in the daily covid commentary on the ABC during the covid pandemic.

As well as the academic work there was lots of time for socialising and fun with the other students on the program. Nadia enjoyed the experience of meeting many other young people with a love of science.

Nadia expressed her deep gratitude to RCG for giving her the opportunity to attend NYSF.
