Grant Hocking addressed our meeting and described the role of the Rotary Foundation, and particularly its importance in funding projects globally and within Australia. Grant has been a Rotarian for 20 years. He is currently the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation for District 9800. He has previously been a club president twice and a past District Governor.
The mission statement of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace, by providing quality education, improving the environment and alleviating poverty. TRF of D9800 is overseen by a Board of 20 individuals with Grant as chairman. The Board also includes Glenferrie Rotarians Thelma Hutchison and Richard Blakeman.
TRF provides funding for projects within 7 areas of focus:
# Peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
# Disease prevention.
# Water sanitation and hygiene.
# Maternal and child health.
# Basic education and literacy.
# Community economic development.
# Environment.
TRF also provides support and funding for End Polio. Grant outlined progress of this initiative and commented that the tiny number of polio cases during the past year were due to vaccine associated polio.
Each year Rotary International offers 130 fellowships for fully funded training in peace building and conflict resolution at seven university-based Peace centres in England, Japan, Sweden or USA. For most of the past 20 years an endorsed candidate from D9800 has been awarded a Peace Fellowship.
Funding for TRF comes from member clubs and individual donations. Regular contributions to a certain level qualify Rotarians for Paul Harris recognition.
The funds allocated from D9800 to projects, including Global Scholars and Polio Plus, amounted to US $213629 in 2023-2024.
The evening concluded with Joanne Shentu presenting our Club's contribution of $5000 to TRF.
