On 11th February club meeting, Rotary Glenferrie welcomed Mr George Petrou OAM to present “The Art of Sacrifice” as our guest presenter. Artist George Petrou OAM is a successful graphic designer and acclaimed portrait artist. "The Art of Sacrifice" is a haunting and poignant product born of a transformative period in the renowned Melbourne artists life, exploring stories of some inspirational and courageous Australians.

George Petrou OAM, centre, presented his book "The Art of Sacrifice", portrayals in words and artwork of the contributions in wartime of some outstanding Australians

Private Norman Morris was the father of Australian rock idol Russel Morris

George Petrou gave a memorable and passionate presentation on his journey to be an acclaimed portrait artist, from his family migration here when he was 4 years old in the 60’s and his earlier years of school and education mixed with his family culture, set him on the path to being a successful graphic artist. He always had an interest in stories of military sacrifice and during Covid he developed this passion into paintings of war veterans thereby narrating their commitments and sacrifice to their country, e.g., Dr Weary Dunlop.

He created the acclaimed book “ The Art of Sacrifice” from these musings and conducted numerous national presentations of his work. In recent times, he has created another artistic book of people and their sacrifices in general.

At our dinner he had 6 screens depicting his work and representations of both of these genres. It was an attention-grabbing presentation and we thank George for his time with us and also his commitment to bring alive our national heroes and their stories of sacrifice.
