Working with the Salvation Army in Boroondara, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie's Care Packs for the Homeless project is a continuing success.  These packs contain such essential toiletry items (eg toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb), clothing items (eg socks, underwear, t-shirts), towels and non-perishable food with long “best before” dates (eg muesli bars, pasta, soup, noodles, juices).
On 2nd December the Glenferrie Rotary Club completed a project to deliver to the Salvation Army in Camberwell 50 packs of 38 items for Emergency Care for the Homeless to a total value of $2500. The Salvation Army does a wonderful job in distributing much needed items to the Homeless people of Boroondara city.
Our packs included basic personal necessities such as: toiletry items (eg toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb), clothing items (eg socks, underwear, t-shirts), towels and non-perishable food with long “best before” dates (eg muesli bars, pasta, soup, noodles, juices).
The following steps were taken by the members of our Community Service Committee:
  • Meetings with the Salvation Army to determine which items would be most beneficial.
  • Visits to local retail stores for research on prices.
  • Committee meetings to finalise our spreadsheet of items.
  • Ordering and collection of 50 of each of 38 items from 5 local retail stores.
  • Delivery of items to the Salvation Army in Athelstan Road, Camberwell.
Up to 400 Homeless people will benefit from our project.
As well as giving vital short-term relief to the Homeless our aim was to gain publicity locally to highlight the extent of the problem in our local area.
Thanks to our team of Liz Andrews, Helena Wimpole, Lyn Kneale and Mick Berry for their very willing work to make this another very successful Glenferrie Rotary project.
