Presidential Musings for the Week

Rotary Monthly Theme is actually Disease Prevention and Treatment

How appropriate – We have been deeply involved in disease prevention and luckily no need for treatment!!

It has been as quiet week for my Rotary commitments.  The AGM has been had and there was no General Meeting last week.  Lots of issues however are rolling along in the background.  It seems there is never stagnation in a Rotarian’s life.  Recently, we had our first Riverside cluster meeting of the Presidents and our illustrious AG Sandi Fulcher in Victoria Park.  It was lovely to not meet on zoom as the lockdown rules ease.  We spent most of the time in idle gossip.  Something that just doesn’t happen electronically!  Tonight, the Board meets face to face.  I am sure there will be no “Idle gossip”, since we will be getting down to the grand business of running our club!

Rotary Christmas Get Together
The Christmas Party this year will be a party with a difference, outdoors in a special place that looms large in the club's plans in 2021. Bring family and friends and a picnic or something for the BBQ for the Annual Christmas Party of the Rotary Club of Glenferrie, this year at Yarra Bank Reserve, Hawthorn. Yarra Bank Reserve is the site of the new Rotary 100 Interactive Play Sculpture that will be built as part of a playground replacement project for the park in 2021. It will be the scene of much derry-do next year, so let's start it all off together. See you for some Christmas fun!

ps. please bring chairs, plates etc. for your picnic.
Education CHANCES Update
For those of you who are relatively new to Glenferrie Rotary, Education CHANCES is the charity that receives 50% of the net profits from the Boroondara Farmers market.  These funds are used to help provide scholarships to talented secondary and tertiary students who live in Boroondara, or study at a government secondary school or tertiary institute in Boroondara, and who come from a proven low income background.

This year has been more than usually busy for us because of the effects of Covid 19 on family incomes, particularly people who have insecure and poorly paid occupations and/or a single mums.

Volunteering Contributes $58.1billion to Victorian Economy in 2019
Volunteering Victoria, the Institute of Project Management and the Victorian Government have produced the a State of Volunteering Report,  the first of its kind in Victoria. The report provides critical information about the value of volunteering in Victoria.

1. In 2019, 2.3 million Victorians aged 15 and over – 42.1% of the adult population volunteered.

2. Victorian volunteers contributed $58.1 billion dollars of value to our economy last year, including:
  • $19.4 billion in costs that would incurred if it was necessary to replace the labour that volunteers contribute to Victoria
  • $8.2 billion contribution to Victoria’s Gross State Product (GSP).
3. Collectively, the findings show that investing in volunteering provides a net return of approximately $3.70 on every dollar invested.
Salvation Army Staples
After discussions with the Salvation Army, they found that there is a shortfall of monthly staples that are required to those in need. Obviously, these Covid19 times have only exacerbated the problem further. The Community Services Committee and the Board approved a monthly drop of much needed canned food over the coming months.

The first drop was delivered to the Salvation Army Camberwell branch today and was much appreciated.

Many thanks to those who donated to this worthy cause.
We are happy to report that we raised $1687.  Parkinson’s is an insidious disease so we are truly grateful for your kindness and support of the Community Services team. No doubt, 2021 shall see us all supporting Parkinson’s Australia at Federation Square in control of the Sausage Sizzle once again!

Kind regards
The Community Service Team

paraprosdokian (/pærəprɒsˈdoʊkiən/) is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence, phrase, or larger discourse is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part.

Ø  I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

Ø  Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Ø  I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

Ø  Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Ø  The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list.

Ø  Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
