Presidential Musings for the Week
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.”  Mark Twain’s quote comes to mind with this week’s riots, although much would appear alcohol fuelled!

What a week – Riots, Earthquakes and a Perth Grand Final for two Melbourne based teams - at least a good feeling with Melbourne winning providing a silver lining. Lots of entertainment for last week but for all the wrong reasons. I am used to watching TV riots usually from somewhere overseas, but not in our own backyard. I guess the same for the earthquake!

As I have pointed out in the past where vaccinations for diseases like Polio, thanks to Rotary have been nearly eliminated. It would be in our dreams to have the same happen to COVID-19!!

Getting the Most out of Your Rotary Membership

I have been speaking a lot lately with club and district leaders about the importance of member engagement. Engaged members are at the heart of who we are and what we do and they’re the key to delivering Rotary’s impact. When I speak with leaders, I talk about the important role they play in delivering a positive membership experience; about the things leaders can do to ensure members are involved, engaged and enjoying Rotary.

Yet I’m very aware that member engagement is a two-way street. There are a host of things that individual members can do to ensure they are getting value from Rotary.

Breakfast Idea Opens Door to 1,000 Volunteers
One Millennial with an idea that brought together the resources and energy of a major Corporate Sponsor, KPMG and Rotary. When newly recruited Rotarian Danielle Schutte mentioned her employer KPMG’s commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals over breakfast with PP Melissa McIntosh, she could not have anticipated the enthusiastic support of DG Dale Hoy, DGN Ron Payne and a duly constituted team of Assistant Governors and Presidents of Clubs.

The following Clubs, listed on the next page, are offering exciting volunteering opportunities to KPMG; and any Rotarians, or other interested volunteers.

Year 11 & 12 Scholarship Grants for 2022-2023

The majority of the Youth committee's projects in 2021 have been suspended until early 2022. Luckily, this year The District Foundation Committee is once again inviting District 9800 clubs to participate in the Year 11-12 Scholarship Program.

Ten Year 11-12 Scholarship Grants will be made available this year for clubs to offer to local schools for the 2022-2023 school years. The grant of $1,000 will match your club’s contribution of $1,000 to provide the scholarship over the two-year period.

The District Foundation Year 11-12 Scholarship Program has been enormously effective in assisting talented and motivated students facing financial hardship to complete their secondary education. Most recipients so far have also gone on to commence tertiary education. Clubs have used this opportunity to strengthen their relationship with local schools and inspire participation in other Rotary Youth programs.
