Rotary 100 Playground Sculpture Taking Shape
Yackandandah is a beautiful town in north eastern Victoria, between the tourist town of Beechworth and the regional cities of Wodonga and Albury. Population about 950. It is also the home of Agency of Sculpture, the business founded by artist-engineer Benjamin Gilbert, whose home in Yackandandah featured in the television program Grand Designs in 2016.

Agency of Sculpture has designed and is building the unique interactive play sculpture that will be the focal point of the new playground at Yarra Bank Reserve, a gift to the community from Rotary to mark the centenary of Rotary in Australia. Project Lead Past President Don Moore and PP Richard Blakeman visited Yackandandah on Tuesday May 18th to check on progress, and they weren't disappointed with what they found. It's Official! Yarra Bank Playground Opening Set for August 8th 2021
It's official! The official opening, that is. The R100 Playground Committee has agreed with the City of Boroondara that the official celebrations for the opening of the Rotary 100 Playground at Yarra Bank Reserve will be on Sunday August 8th, 2021. The event will be a giant Family Fun Day, featuring children's entertainment, music, refreshment stalls, and the Rotary Club of North Balwyn is coming to the party too, to provide the sausage sizzle for the day.

The Rotary clubs of Glenferrie, Camberwell, Hawthorn, Canterbury and North Balwyn are partnering with the City of Boroondara for this special event. Families from all over Boroondara will be invited to come along and enjoy the day, and share with Rotarians, family and friends of Rotary this very special anniversary. So keep the date free. And keep eyes peeled for more news via the Bulletin and on Facebook!

Club Meeting 18th May - Dave Carlos
Our speaker last Tuesday gave us an insight into Australia’s near neighbour – East Timor.  In 1998 Dave Carlos and his wife Shirley formed a connection with the Timorese refuge community in Melbourne.  They began visiting the country in 1998 and wanted to develop a sustainable business to help build the local communities, particularly those outside of the capital, Dili.

Boroondara Farmers Market - 15th May
There was appalling weather on Saturday morning as we arrivied to set up the Market. At 5:00am prior to the Market gate opening time at 6:00am Melbourne’s temperature was a cold 8.2⁰ with an apparent temperature at 4.0⁰. It had been raining overnight and the hail forecast did not auger well for a pleasant Saturday morning.

Robert Winspear arrived prior to 6:00am, inspected Patterson Reserve and found it to be heavily waterlogged in parts. He made the responsible suggestion that for the benefit of turf management, patrons ease of movement, stallholders and their vehicles movement, we would be better placed to move the Market into the adjacent carpark.

Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship
SURF, as is the apt acronym for the Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship, was the inspiration of a Rotarian living in California, who believed that surfing would be an excellent way to engage the younger generation, something that Rotary is eager to do.

Rotary International recognised this dynamic Fellowship In December 2017.  Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors are all welcome to join, which is free for Rotaractors and Interactors, but Rotarians are required to pay a membership fee.
