Presidential Musings for the Week
Well Hi All.
Looks like a long winter for all.

So sad to hear about the deaths and social misconnections that COVID is causing.
We – Glenferrie Rotarians - are a family so please let me know of anyone in problems.  Social isolation and mental attitudes are really being tested in this environment.

I am conscious that many of our members are solo and so our club is a vital link for communication and friendship.  Humans are social animals and this COVID is testing our spirits.  However, Rotarians are robust and ready.  Zoom meetings are the norm but we as Rotarians feel for our own members.  As a result, I want to implement a zoom session - Wine and cheese meeting - between our routine meetings (this time August 18th).

Meeting Report for July 28th 2020 - The Pros and Pros of an Electric Car
The Topic for Tuesday night’s meeting was a real thought provoker. Would You Buy an Electric Car?  We had 27members including one from RC of Hawthorn join the Zoom Meting. With so many questions marks regarding fossil fuels and their future I am not surprised that we had such an interested attendance.

We were fortunate to have Andrew Rothfield, who is the husband of Thelma Hutchison be the presenter, he has had a very interesting career background, first studying Computer Science and Statistics, followed by Medicine with 20 years in obstetrics, he then retrained in Conveyancing where he runs his own business. With the love of the outdoors and renewal energy it is not surprising that their home has a lot of solar appliances and that they “share” a Tesla Electric car.

What Rotarians Can Achieve with the Help of The Rotary Foundation is simply Amazing
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie has partnered with the Rotary Foundation and other clubs to deliver some truly inspiring projects over the past few years. Those projects include the establishment of the Hawthorn Men's Shed, the  Clean Water and Sanitation Project in Timor Leste, the Bike Rescue Project with the Yiyili Aboriginal School in northern Western Australia, and the clubs Rotary 100 project to build a unique interactive playground feature at Yarra Bank Reserve Hawthorn. This incredible story about a recycling project in Brazil speaks volumes about the power of Rotary and the value of the Rotary Foundation.

Membership Revitalises Rotary Clubs
The energy of Rotary comes from the collective energy of its members. In large and small ways, how we support one another and work cooperatively on projects is how we ‘do good in the world’. New members provide energy, enthusiasm, skills and passion, which drive Rotary clubs forward.

Across Australia and New Zealand, Clubs recruit 12% new members every year, but lose 15% of members every year. This is not a path to the future, added to which our club membership is ageing. We simply must change our model to be relevant in a world which has changed dramatically. Another alarming statistic is that 40% of new members leave within their first two years.  Why?

Rotary International's Response to COVID-19
Rotary members throughout the world are working safely and diligently to assess and provide for urgent community needs as they strive to respond and recover from the effects of COVID-19 coronavirus. Rotary International has assisted in this by providing $20 million to support Rotary clubs worldwide.

Mark Daniel Maloney, president of Rotary International stated, “In the face of uncertainty, we are adapting to shifting needs to offer immediate help to people at a rapid pace. And we'll remain committed to recovering from this health crisis for as long as it takes.”

How a hole in Mum’s kitchen table led to a fifty year career in media
Respected throughout the Media industry, John has been a popular and in-demand fixture of
the Melbourne TV, Radio, Advertising and Corporate worlds for almost 40 years. Perhaps
best known as the Voice of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and the man that told excited contestants on
the ‘New Price Is Right’ to ‘Come on Down”, John, or ‘Deeksie’ as he is widely known, was
also the face of Tattslotto and Powerball draws and the Host and Compere of ‘Family Feud’.
In recent years Myer has also selected a very proud John to narrate the iconic ‘Christmas
Window’ display at their Bourke St. store.
